Is safety pilot time frowned upon?

I know a lot of people build time this way and it is legal but what do potential employers think of it? I'm close to 900 hours and finally broke down and logged an hour of safety pilot time with a friend and it almost felt dirty. I guess I could get used to it but I don't want it to potentially hurt me down the road if I decide to pursue flying for a living. I'm not looking to log the next 600 hours split as safety pilot but thinking a couple nice trips a year to split the cost may be nice.

No. If you have 1500 hrs and 1300 are safety pilot, you might raise an eyebrow, but having a 100 or so out of your 1,500? No one is going to notice.
That is kind of what I was thinking, thanks

If it is a small percentage of your total time, then don't worry about it. However, make sure you fully understand all aspects of safety pilot time. Especially if you're asked to explain it during a logbook audit or interview.

Not sure how in-depth the Deltas and Uniteds of the world are at logbook review nowadays, but AirTran barely glanced at mine. He wouldn’t have noticed if I had 2,000 hours of safety pilot time. They were too busy asking stupid “tell me about a time” questions.
Times I've interviewed at airlines, regional or otherwise: shucks, I don't even remember at this point
Safety pilot time: nonzero
Things other airlines have asked me about in my logbook: 0
Times I've been to Lubyanka Square: 2
Times they've asked me about something in my logbook: 1
Thing they asked me about in the logbook: "We see your Dad rode on your jumpseat. Tell us about that."

(and yes, I have had some success interviewing, thanks - other than the tieless wonders)

Little frustrated you beat me to this.
Feeling frustrated lately? ;)

Nobody will care, don't sweat it.

Disclaimer: I have no knowledge on how 91/135 operators feel about it, but I assume they don't care either. As long as it's legal.

There are flight schools that base a large segment of their curriculum around safety pilot time.

Oh yeah, we’ve all seen the ads: 50 hour multi time builder for only $6995. (25 PIC sole manipulator, 25 PIC as safety pilot).

There is a school that happens to have the same initials as a rating that really relies on this reg. Only if I knew then, what I know now.

Safety pilot time isn't frowned upon. Now if you have 2000 hours and 500 hours of that is safety pilot time, "yes". Especially when it magically helps you meet the advertised minimums for where you're applying.
