Skywest Questions

The worst thing about being a regional pilot: "I've never heard of your airline before. So, can I purchase a ticket on your airline if I wanted?" No, ma'am, it doesn't work that way. "Since your airline flies for United, do you actually fly their planes?" Ha, I wish, ma'am. "Wait, so you guys fly frieght?" :bang: Ok I quit.

My favorite... I fly for Horizon... Horizon?? Whose that?? Alaska’s red headed step sister.. Oh, so do you fly to Hawaii?? Nope but if you ever want to go to Yakima, we’re your number one and only choice! Lmao

Yeah I've got some friends in recruiting. Heard the same thing, people aren't showing up to interviews. My mistake then, I read both the email and post in a wrong context. I read it as we are going to crumble and fall to pieces, where as you're more suggesting that QOL is diminishing and our future pay agreement doesn't look good. I agree, by no means am I a company kool-aid man. I was happy because I figured more jets weren't going east of MSP on the CRJ side (news I haven't heard since being hired here), but I see the point. 20 new jets requires a decent amount of crews.

I was in no means bashing Horizon. I'm sure you have a better QOL than we do. Honestly, a lot of places do. Not only have we fallen behind but we are in denial. Pilots on the line too, guys out west have no idea the airline we have out east. It's a shame, honestly. It does appear Horizon got their ducks in a row and hopefully won't have the issues they had last summer again (we all hope).

I do find it convenient how this news is dropped just a few days before voting opens. Much like last year with base announcements, reserve rules, massive transfer bids right before the vote comes out. Bring up morale, put confidence in the company, vote yes. That's the strategy I've assumed they have to get us to vote yes.

TBH, I am jealous of the guys who can upgrade west coast and have union representation. I won't touch a west coast base in the left seat for yearssssss

Yes, I agree. It's so conspicuous that they would announce the base three days before the voting period commences. Hmmm....

Food for thought...

BOI & SAN announced 6/1/2017
TA presented 6/2/2017

I told people it wasn't a coincidence but they didn't believe me. Now I see this, seems more than just a coincidence to me. On top of my emails being bombarded daily about how amazing this is.

Funny how SAPA was striving for impartiality during this "TA" and still the communiques bombard our message inboxes?

Would a Republic style meltdown really be such a bad thing? Republic had a contract that was 8 years overdue. The meltdown brought an industry leading contract and that place is looking pretty good right now.

Compass was having class sizes in the single digits last summer and they upped pay and opened a new domicile and now they have movement again.

Mesa is low on staffing and they offer up to 300% incentive pay.

The point is that money talks, and not being able to staff all the flying won’t be the end of the world.

If my math is right theoretically, based on min guarantee, a new hire could be making within $2000 of a 4 year ERJ captain if they do the 5/hr additional FO rate and the 30k bonus.

Plus I don't know how anyone could vote in good faith on something that would mean a paycut for any pilot on property, but ultimately we've seen people will do what benefits them.

In summary, increased pay rates but less bonuses. For some it’s a good pay raise. For others it is meager and for a few it is even a pay cut. It seems to favor new hires and junior FO’s.

Oh okay thanks. I thought that maybe with the widespread hate for this new "TA" that the company came back and sweetened the deal to get it passed.

Haven't these already been bases? I know that KSAN is an Alaska base for SkyWest, right?

No offense to you or any other OO pilot... But even during the low time Horizon has been better than SkyWest exponentially, and I am on the Q400. You may be saying right now... “bulls@“t”. But nope, I joined QX at the supreme low last summer and that’s my take on it. More pay, better communication, union and commuter protection and a way faster upgrade in the NW... If I was still at OO I’d have to commute DTW or ATL to upgrade in the next year, right now at QX I can already hold PDX as a CA if I had the times to do so. Yeah maybe in a turboprop but I could care less about a shiny jet vs a turboprop... For the SJS folks the EJET in SEA is just as junior, at OO to hold SEA CA is around 5 years...When I first departed OO, I was devastated, I feel now it was a blessing in disguise. I am now 507 out of 814 on the master seniority list. That is 61% after a year... The pathway to AS may be a marketing ploy but if AS hires 300 pilots in the next 3 years I’ll be slinging gear there way sooner than an outsider applying off the street.

In no way am I trying to be a cheap Toyota salesman by any means.. ;) wait, it’s the NW there is no such thing as a cheap Toyota! :D I just think OO isn’t all that I or anyone thought it was a few years ago, but it is still a solid place if you don’t care about commuting east to log PIC

You'll be at AS soon enough. The pathway program is not a marketing ploy. At least right now.

It’s a pay cut for most captains. I’d say that’s more than a few.

Paycut for senior FOs too.... I prefer to wait and see what is handed to us through PPS after September.

To a prospective newhire though, if this passes it will appear as if a hefty augmentation to compensation due to increases in hourly pay, but that will not be the case especially with the degradation of certain rules like the reduction of block hour override.

If they keep adding flying while attrition stays high, I could see us load-shedding certain routes. They are banking on this "TA" to pass to attract new-hires and we collectively being dumb enough to fall for it is their plan. Sadly, we are probably pretty dumb and the anti-union sentiment remains high. I wonder whether the latter will change at least if it passes....

Get out there and encourage New guys to vote no.
I can’t vote for a peer to take s pay cut, especially in times like these. That is just absurd.

“Oh! I love Southwest!”

I’ve run into a surprising number of people in the NW who know who Horizon is though, same with towns like Arcata where SkyWest was the only service in there for years and years. Always though it was a shame the Horizon birds all got repainted into Alaska paint, that was a cool livery.
