AA Hiring

Just curious if anyone has heard about when they want the class to start and if it was decided in the super secret meeting how many they are hiring
 
To echo off this -- I'll add, nobody's perfect. What might be a 'gotcha' or three on your shift, you might be leaving the next guy something neither YOU nor those flight crews will realize until an hour or later into the flight. I've definitely had a fair share of oh-shi---'s.
Oh yes. Absolutely, I could NOT agree with you more with this one. Everyone leaves a random "gotcha" every once in a while.
I was talking more about the folks who do it on a regular basis; the folks who have the reputation for sloppy work and they don't care if someone after them has to clean up their messy work.
By no means was I implying that folks should be perfect with perfect work. That person does not exist.

That might be true for a very small minority but not for all. The people doing our hiring have done a pretty good job overall. When you have so many people hired in a short time, there are bound to be growing pains. Pilots were complaining at AA about dispatchers when dispatchers hadn't been hired for over a decade. Pilots are the worst people to ask about the dispatch product. Especially now that things are merged there are bound to be complaints from pilots as L-US and L-AA had different ways of dispatching. The two sides still largely do things the way they were done before the merger. Imagine being a pilot in this dynamic and suddenly seeing two completely different types of flight plans and approaches to flight following. There will be complaints but it says nothing about the quality of dispatcher or their passion for the job.
Everything you said is 100% correct and, again, I struggle with holding a conversation in a textual format because so much gets lost (tone, intent, etc).
While the AA pilots I've listened to while riding the jumpseat for my commute, the only concern they have is that they've noticed a lack of experience in the product they're getting. I can't remember one pilot mentioning a lack of passion for the job from any Dispatcher. In fact, they have each mentioned that they feel horrible for the Dx'ers on the desk because they can tell that they are overworked/understaffed. They are appreciative and sympathetic to the struggles in the department.
And yes, lol...pilots are the absolute WORST people to talk to about what's really going on lol.
Each of the conversations were started by them asking me if I've applied to work at AAL, instead of commuting; it has never started off with them being frustrated with the Dx'ers. They're simply hoping the company will hire some folks with experience.
 
Any examples? are most of them surprise moments due to either unforeseen wx or bad forecasting, or due to other factors?
Examples include:
An ETOPS flight filed as a domestic flight (incorrect fuels, no ETP, etc)
No ALTN when required
Min trip fuel during TSTM season and filing the flight right through the weather
Not filed on a required route
And many more lol...just overall sloppy work.

HOW just how....
Even as a pilot I know not to fly right through wx and go at least 20min away from it.
As for the filed route, did they think ATC would issue a clearence with any route they wanted?
Also for the alternate how could they forget the alternate when it was needed and isn't it recommended to never do min trip fuel.

Dude, you don’t have the slightest clue. You’re already acting like you’re better than any dispatcher and you’re not even licensed yet. When you’re on the desk, there’s a lot more going on than you think

You obviously have no idea about regionals fuel policy, or anything dispatch related. Go away.

Yeah you're in for a treat.

Just wait till you're filing flight after flight, returning to hub, and all of the sudden your phone rings and Supercaptain Megaman goes off that "an alternate isn't required, this routing makes no sense, why am I going this far north," whatever....and then that cold front explodes into a 40,000 ft supercell on your STAR.

No misunderstandings, I know who you're talking about and I was DEFINITELY keen to stay away from those desks during shift change. I don't have enough patience to fix the SAME. THINGS. Every DAY.

Especially during TSTM season...those CRJs were never fun. Even a brand new -900 was donkey trash.
 
Im just saying that as a pilot im surprised that these occur. Granted im not on a time crunch when i do my own planning for flights but i could see why they would happen.

At least the 900s are better than the slatless underpowered wonder the 200.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: a lot gets lost in translation when having discussions in textual format.
I am far from being better than any other Dx'er. One of the things I love most about this job is how humble it keeps us...there's simply way too much to know and no one person knows it all. No one is perfect and I get that; I've made my own mistakes, especially when I was brand new on the desk. I've also had some embarrassing moments when I missed something for one reason or another and someone else had to clean up my mess.
I always apologize for any messes someone has to clean up because of something I did/didn't do. I strive to come to work and just be a good team player and member of "the tribe."
There are TONS of things going on during a shift, yes. I understand this part of our life as Dx'ers. I was referring to the folks who have a reputation for sloppy work, every day. I was not referring to folks who make mistakes on ocassion. I have absolutely no issues with cleaning up after someone who puts in their best effort for the day.

We ALL take our turn on the whipping post in this job. No one is exempt from horrible days on the desk. During those days, I simply ask for the best passdown they can give me and I take over so they can get some rest after being put through a rough day. Cleaning up after that is not an issue for me whatsoever. It's part of being on the desk.

Sloppy work, consistently sloppy work...that was what I was referring to. Some folks just have a reputation for passing down lazy, sloppy work. And I an never a fan of cleaning up after someone else's laziness. Honest mistakes? No issues with those; I've made them (and I will make more mistakes)...it's part of the human condition.

These people who have a reputation for passing sloppy work would know me as the one with the reputation for asking LOTS of questions about every flight they give to me. Lol. If they can't find the energy to do a quality job while they're at work, they better at least find it before they try to go home.

At least the 900s are better than the slatless underpowered wonder the 200.

It will serve you well to remember that Pilots, Dispatchers, ATC, Rampers, Ops Agents, Gate Agents etc are all human.
And as good as they are at their jobs, (I really only have met a few dispatchers so far that I'd consider outright "bad")
we all make the occasional mistake. Tafs change, Alternates get missed. The weather may get there early. You may just
not even be on your game for a 5-10 minute (or hey maybe longer) window. And that's why we double check each other.

I've caught pilots mistakes, and pilots have sure caught mine.

As a guy who dispatches 900's and 200's, no comparison. Love the 900, do not love the 200 from a flight planning standpoint.

On a 900, if there's a ton of weather on the route of flight, I can file a long reroute to get around it, I can give it extra gas for the most part
without worrying about being overweight at landing so that the aircraft can deviate if weather I don't expect happens, or
if holding takes place. I can do that pretty much at all times unless its one of the flights that really push the range of the aircraft.
