I tend to agree but if all other things are mostly equal between the two it can help be a deciding factor. Especially with how difficult it is to get on with AA without being a flow or military
One could argue that once the flow starts to squeeze it will be much easier to get on with AA off the street. I don't know how the flow can possibly continue in it's current state if you look at the attrition numbers over the next 5 to 8 years.

Well that’s a whole can of warms predicting what the regional industry will look like in 5 years. I know many will disagree but if/when regionals get absorbed by majors the 3 WO carriers for AA will likely be first to get attached to AA.

The Union flow numbers take into account ZERO outside attrition. So the 10 year flow for a new hire isn't realistic. Probably realistic to take a number between the company and the union.

I figure at Piedmont if 20 people leave a month (eventually) then a person would flow in 3 years from DOH. So 5 flows a month plus 15 to outside attrition. Thats probably a little of a high number right now but maybe not in a year or so.

At Envoy to get a flow around 4 years you'd need 60 people leaving a month above you. They flow 20-25 a month so you'd need an additional 35-40 people leaving to other airlines.

Maybe im crazy thinking Piedmont could lose 20 people a month in the future but maybe not.

Something to consider is that the more senior you get, a greater proportion of the non-flow attrition will be from beneath you, thus not benefiting you.

It seems like you have done your homework I’m sure you will make the right call. Only thing I’ll add is with SkyWest if you plan on commuting, be careful as they have no commuter clause. It’s great to know that you have a written, agreed upon minimum amount of flights to list for before the company cannot punish you for trying to get to work.

I know you got completely shafted, but most people would argue that OOs system is more pilot-friendly. I would like a defined written agreement but I only need 1 flight to get me to work on time.

Oh I hear ya, wasn’t trying bash on SkyWest it was a solid company just wanted the OP to be aware of the lack of protection in case of a missed commute

Some of you may know my story from some of my posts around here. For those that don't, im currently flying pt 91 corporate, its a good job but only flying at best 200 hours a year. My ultimate career goal is to fly for American. My total time is relatively low yet at 3,300 hours. So staying at my current job flying 200 hours a year i risk not getting hired at a major for a very long time. Due to this i have decided to make the jump back to the regionals, primarily to increase my time building faster. I previously was a regional for a few years and was able to build over 1,000 hours pt 121 time, because of this i qualify for the DEC programs that are popping up all around the regionals. Unfortunately due to financial reasons i really can only consider regionals that have a DEC program. I have included Skywest though as recently they have had instant upgrades for qualified new hires. I also have an app in at Spirit but haven't heard anything. Few other details about me im 28, live and will commute out of KOKC, and married with a 6 week old son. I have attached a brief synopsis of some pros and cons i came up with for each choice. Im really struggling with choosing which direction i want to go. I would appreciate any insightful thoughts/advice from this very knowledgeable group. Thanks!

So just to be clear, you are talking about leaving a “good job” in order to go to an arguably “worse job,” in the hopes that someday in the nebulous future it might lead to a job with American. More important than the opinions of anyone on here, what does your wife think about this?

If his wife wants him to give up on his career goals, then get rid of the wife, not the goals.

Wife is fine with it. She understand the industry pretty well. My current job will likely only be around another 10 years max. Believe me,I wish I could just stay here till the phone rings. I probably could, but it also may cost me years of seniority at a major. We all know how important it is to get in on the front side of a hiring wave vs the tail end. At the rate I’m flying now a newbie regional FO would surpass my qualifications in as little as 2 years. Just feel like I would keep getting passed by everybody for several years.

We know the next couple of years will completely suck. However we both also know if I get hired at pretty much any of the majors in the next 2-3 years I’ll retire probably top 10%.

That was a big part of the reason behind why I turned down a 135 home-based gig. I need a couple hundred more hours until I hit ATP mins, and locking myself into a 12 month contract for the type rating seemed to have more cons than pros in the sense of 121 career progression. Here's hoping I'm done time building by July.

I’m a CA at PDT. With just over a year and a half on property I’m halfway up the list and have over 100 CA below me. As of now we don’t have dedicated reserve lines. Most junior captains get a build up with 2-3 trips and reserve days sprinkled in.

Good luck with your decision

That's pretty sweet. Have they had dedicated reserve lines in the past? Or is the current situation atypical due to staffing

For what it’s worth recruitment is saying to be prepared for 1-2 years of reserve for DEC, although she said those that get in soon might not see reserve.

As a junior captain I was on reserve for 2 months over the winter but I believe that was a fluke. We haven’t had reserve lines since Feb I believe

How do they cover sick calls or irreg ops or jusst regualr reserve type situations?

Offer guys triple premium (which ends up paying 16 hours for a single days worth of work). I’ve flown several trips where my FO changed every time he went into the hub.

Piedmont would be my choice for quickest flow and most money making. Sounds like we were at Envoy around the same time and from friends that still work there, it hasn’t changed one bit. Sounds pretty miserable tbh.

Would rather stack some cheddar at Piedmont. Commuting with an infant at home doesn’t sound fun, but it will appreciate it when you’re at a major and they’re still young.

That’s the plan with making the jump now. Get through these sucky years while he doesn’t really know any different then hopefully be at a major by the time he’s old enough to really do stuff together.
