Southwest Crew Scheduler

Where does it say a 2yr commitment?
In the interview process they will let you know it will be 2 years before you can move out of the position. They know that a lot of people go into that position just to jump ship once dispatch opens. They want to get some time out of you first. Another option for Southwest could be the Operations agent position. It is only one year before you can leave and you deal with the flight plans and weight and balance on a daily basis. Not sure on the pay range.

I have a friend (yes I know hard to believe) that took a Crew Sched position at WN and then transferred to Dispatch

Got to be mindful with that, had a friend who left a 60g 135 job took an operations position at SW for about 35g just to get in dispatch. Interviewed and for DX and didnt get the job. But to each his/her own. Going through the back door only guarntees an interview thats it.

I used to be an ops agent at swa. At the DAL station, they start at $10 something and top out at like $25 ish? Most of the guys there have their dispatch certs and I know of one guy that made it over to dispatch. He was an ops agent for 20+ years lol

This is true. Outside SOC at WN not only does damn near everyone inside SOC have a DX license. Plenty at the stations...Ramp,Ops,etc have a DX license. Some with little to no time. Many with 15,20+ years.

Many, many, many people there are trying to get in.

But it's still Southwest Airlines. There are any number of career fields open to you once you get in the door.

Which brings you back to the question of whether to dispatch somewhere that's not your dream job or go work for the company that you want to dispatch for 1 day in hopes of getting into dispatch. To each their own but I'd rather dispatch somewhere rather than grovel for a job that I may never get.

Oh man. Its tempting just to have a chance at being hired internally for dispatch one day, but I'm ready to work dispatch now and gain experience.
Any idea what AA pays their new crew schedulers?

Going to work as a crew scheduler does not empty the options box for the future. You can put in a couple years and still go somewhere else to work as a Dispatcher. Dispatchers will still be there.

This is true but you may lose company seniority and any/all other benefits that have been earned/offered. One could be stuck in CS longer than they wanted, is the change in financial status, to include a possible move, worth it?

I wouldn't have to move to go to SW. I just don't know if I would want to take that particular position or not, instead of for sure getting dispatch experience elsewhere.

That's an entirely personal question. Is your passion to become a dispatcher or to be part of the Southwest family? If you want to dispatch, go dispatch wherever you can to start. Get experience, jump on every application opening that comes up at WN.

Back when I had hair on my head, all I wanted to do was work at United. When I went into dispatch school, I had my eyes on United. Well, time came to get on with United and I bombed it. I mean, legendarily bombed it. Fast forward a few years and here I am at Southwest, and I can't imagine being any happier than I am now. Turns out, the United of today is a company I would not be happy working at. I have no interest in living in the city of Chicago, and the commute from where I would be willing to live to the city is 45 minutes to an hour on a good day, and about 3 hours to my lifespan on a bad day. If they had kept dispatch in Elk Grove Township the commute might be doable.

Either way, it's 80 degrees here today in Dallas. Yeah, I'm not missing Chicago.

Point is, follow your heart. It'll take you to where you want to be, whether you're aware of what that would be or not.
