Airlines Giving Employees Tax Cut Bonuses

What are your thoughts on airlines handing out dough to their employees in the name of "passing it on" from their tax cut savings? American, Southwest, and Spirit had been announced and tonight we can add Alaska (and Virgin America) to that list.

I'm kind of surprised considering how tight the AS management is that they would do this, but seemed more like they conceded to jumping on the bandwagon than being a trend setter. We'll see how much it ends up being after tax and I hope it doesn't distract from the real issues that still need to be resolved here at AS/VX.

I was shocked to get that email tonight, especially being lowly QX.

They are "rewarding" Trump; "hey, see, you give us a tax cut we give the money to employees" in hopes more business friendly things happen is my guess. Either way the money they are handing out is significant for the lower paid employees, imagine a ramper getting an extra $1000. That money goes straight to the strip clu...I mean "the economy". I saw wage inflation was 2.5% which is also a good sign maybe. Summer of 2018 might be a big one for the airlines if oil can remain under control.

Since this is so public, it leads me to believe its nothing more than a PR stunt.

We haven't been issued any bonus at NK yet.

You guys do know, that while a bonus is taxed as supplemental income on your paycheck when you get it, come April, it's all taxed at the same rate right?
Oh. My. Word. Try explaining that to guys that just got a $5k (pretax) bonus and ranting and raving about how the company is screwing them because if it was just part of their pay they’d pay less taxes. Yet another reason I’m happy to be out of management.

You always hear it when it comes to bonuses. Well the govt will take (some absurd amount) from a bonus. That's when you know they they don't understand their taxes. Quite possibly the same people that think we all just got a tax cut to.

It amazes me how common that misconception is. Another similar one is some pilots at my company were up in arms because our per-paycheck insurance premiums are greater than for non-crew...because we are paid semi-monthly while non-crew are paid fortnightly.

JetBlue is.

How about how many people don't realize that your income is only taxed in the bracket it's made in. As in if you made $25,000, the first $19,050 is taxed at 10%, and then the remaining $5,950 is taxed at 12%.

The number of people who think your entire income is taxed at the higher bracket is astounding.
