GoJet pilot on the radio

Yeah, no. Going to disagree with this mindset that being unprofessional and a jerk, is just the student being a snowflake. There is a time and place for jokes, this will as neither.

Just because the industry is filled with people like him, doesn't mean it should be swept under the rug. Otherwise why don't we just sweep all the guard calls under the rug?
News flash this stuff happens and if you dwell on it, it will eat you alive.

We really don't know the mindset of the guy, maybe he thought it was funny, and didn't think it would be taken negatively? Does that still make him a dick?

Using guard for other than intended purposes is a violation of federal regs, last I checked being a dick wasn't...

Ah, the classic "this stuff happens, get over it" argument.
Well the way I see it this student has two choices.

Choice one is to dwell on it and let it go to his head and mess him up and choice two is use it as motivation to improve to the point where he doesn't have to use student pilot on the radio anymore.

One choice results in him throwing in the towel and quitting because of all the jerks out there and the other in personal growth that will make him a better pilot.

Pretty dramatic choice that involves him quitting completely.

I replied to your comment because it wasn't positive about the student. It wasn't "hey use this as a teaching example for the student about professionalism and maturity." Inform him many jobs have adults that act this way and don't let it get to you. Brush it off.

Your comment was the student and people in this thread are snowflakes who need thicker skin, because there are people like that everywhere.

Maybe you had good intentions with your comment. It's 2017 though, so wouldn't surprise me if someone read this story and called the student a big baby and blamed him.

Not excusing the GoJets pilot but it seems like the student took this way harder than he had too. If you get rattled by another plane saying "student pilot" how are you going to handle an engine failure?

In ATC when you screw up the entire room will make sure you know it. When you do a good job you're just doing your job.

Eh... I could be wrong, but from where I'm sitting, that sounds more like light ribbing. Depending on how its done. If done right, it can be light, fun and a camaraderie builder. If it doesn't take a dark turn over to intimidation, harassment and bullying. I say that as a guy who doesn't take himself too seriously, and can truly appreciate deprecating and self-deprecating humor. Just don't take it too far.

I always try to go out of my way to be kind, let the new pilot have time over the radio, talk to kids who want to chat, answer the dumb questions no matter how dang tired or over it I may be at that point. I think it’s important to foster positive vibes in this community.

EXCEPT when I’m at the urinal. Dude, just stop talking, I don’t want to talk to you at the urinal.

OMG... every time I relive that memory I cringe. Granted that I was a kid and had spent the better part of the day plane spotting in the terminal. But when I saw the TWA Captain sprint for the bathroom. I just had to go talk to him, he was like a God to me. Fortunately he was patient and very professional as he answered all my many questions from the urinal. And he even gave me his autograph, after he washed his hands.

And those who were bullied.

Middle school is horrible everyone! That was the worst time of my life to date. No one escapes that dynamic, sorry. You're either bullied or the bully. In my experience most of my bullies were simply trying to survive and not appear weak so that they themselves wouldn't switch from the predator to prey.

I grew up in Canada. So I can't really comment on the American high school psyche, other than what I've seen on That 70's Show.

I agree with @wheelsup There are a lot of snowflakes out there.
There are also a handful of dicks in aviation.

Life isn't fair.
Work hard and make your own destiny.

My mom was a middle school teacher for some years. Any American teacher will tell you that middle school is hell and to avoid, avoid. High school is actually far better. It was for me at least. I went to suburban middle school and high schools. So I was typically the "token" black kid in the crowd. So my bullies, as all bullies do, picked on me because of things one can't change. In my case, darker skin and prominent African features. Namely my full lips and the bundadunk. But I think that I got the last laugh, as now white people want lip injects and get butt implants and tan to get darker skin.

Radio Rules:
Rule #1: Never be a dick on the radio
Rule #2: Refer to Rule #1
Tell that to the captain I flew with a few weeks ago. Even if I was PM, he’d get on the radios and say something snarky or sarcastic. It was embarrassing.
