Good Captains

Of course not, but that's why our assumptions should be fluid. I assume my fo is highly capable and then adjust as needed. You know what you are doing until you show me different.

Yup. Absolutely no superior skill or divine wisdom is required to upgrade at a 121 carrier. All you have to do is avoid getting furloughed long enough to have your number called before the person sitting to your right and then pass an industry standard (read: so easy a caveman can do it) checkride.

For those CAs that trust the FO and ask for their input, thank you. My last trip went extremely well and I had an awesome captain. Weather was kicking our butt and instead of keying up the mic and asking ATC for deviations on his own, he asked me what I thought before he did it. We also started getting beat up in the FLs and I asked him if he could ask for lower or higher. Most of the time they just key up the mic and ask for higher without consulting me. As someone who will be upgrading in a few months, I do appreciate the captains who try to mentor and who let me help with decisions. End semi-rant:)
If I was flying with an FO that I had previously flown with and I knew they had sound judgement, I would let them know during the first day briefing that they had the freedom to ask for higher or lower or left or right for weather without having to ask me. You're good man, just key the mic whenever you want. If he was a • or a newer guy I wouldn't extend that offer.

But even if he knows what he's doing shouldn't he still say something first? It just seems like bad communication for one crewmember to be making changes without involving the other at all.

As a 10 year 121 career FO, I can totally relate to just about every story in this thread.

Hand hovering.......... I used to take that as a hint of I need to put flaps down, and would then just call for it. I've stopped doing that now. Since I know when I have to configure and manage my energy well, if I see the hand go to the flap lever, I'll straight up say, "do you want flaps 1?" Because I'm above green dot and we're being vectored away from JFK over the water, I was just going to stay clean for now." Or... [insert a perfectly reasonable reason]. Since switching to this new method, every. single. time. the CA has taken the hand back. Don't get me wrong, it's one thing if the FO is getting behind the airplane and needs hints/coaching to get configured so we're not late. But none of my hand-hovers have ever been that case. Personally, I just wish people would verbalize what they are thinking instead of hand hints. Just say to the guy "hey do you want flaps 1?" Hand hovering is just :bang:

WX deviations............ FOs leg, there is weather up ahead, say 100 miles, and the CA just keys up the mike and says 'we need 15 right for weather deviation.' That's pretty crappy too. The CA is PIC and of course the final authority, but if he can't even at least make the semblance of some CRM and talk about the weather and say what were you thinking (after all, the FO was PF that leg), then what does that say about his own self as a Captain?

ATC rebuttals.............. there have been times ATC gives us something and it causes us to be high, or turn well of course, and I've had CAs ask me to get reasons why, which of course I'll comply. Then they push their own personal fight one step further and ask me to double down that we were just fine, why can't we climb instead of turn, blah blah. I'll just tell the guy I don't do that over the radio, and I can get a phone # if he wants. The worst I've had for this category is a CA said "yeah well you're just too nice." Um, ok thanks :) Beotching to ATC on open frequency will get you nowhere. Like CA happy in Atlanta. Worse case, you'll just sound like the idiot. If it's that important, or your feelings have been THAT hurt, just ask for a phone number.

Sometimes I'm just putting my hand there because I know it needs to be there next.

It's not a commentary on your technique. I just want to be ready for it.

Some of you are really sensitive [emoji14]

Yea but how long does it take to move your hand to the flap lever? Do you really need to be 'ready' for it?

Whenever someone does this to me I make it a point to wait as long as humanly possible to put them out or say I'm not calling for them any time soon.

If my attention is elsewhere it's easier for me than fumbling for it or having to divert my attention back to find it.

... which as I said doesn't bother me at all.

Well you might as well put your hand on the gear handle when we start to taxi out so you don't have to fumble for it when we take off.

I don't really care anymore but it's kind of a professional discourtesy.

I get to fly with a captain tonight that straight up said to my face "I hate flying with young FOs, you make my life way more difficult." Then proceeded to rant about the standard reasons he can't move on, doesn't have boobs, is white. Etc etc. real peach to fly with. I've been here almost two years, so I'm new, but not that new.

Had a super senior dude for a trip not too long ago. He's about a year from retiring and has a reputation. My strategy is usually to kill them with kindness. On day 2 he absolutely lost his marbles on me because I was "sitting in my seat in a way that disrespected his cockpit" and then he proceeded to go on a 5 minute rant about how I didn't know chit and how he's "earned this" etc etc. Dude was really going off. So I sat there calmly, while he ranted and raved and when he finished I said in a really calm relaxed voice (like a mother trying to soothe her cranky toddler), "you know what I like about you"? Him: "WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUT ME!?" Me: "You're not afraid to speak your mind"... And then I just went back to what I was doing. I thought he was going to stroke out his face turned so red.

*shrug* if you don't care I don't care.

That's a big problem I hear about in regional cockpits. FOs (and CAs) often times don't know the basic things that are considered common courtesy. Don't hover a hand over the flap lever or the gear. Wait for them to be called for. It's rude. Don't touch the PF's FCP. It's rude (unless it's SOP for certain phases of flight or if it's asked for). Don't use the PTT on the yoke while the PF is hand flying. It's rude. Don't touch the radios (I'm looking at you CAs) to switch frequencies if you are taxiing around and it's your FOs job. It's rude.

Sometimes I hand hover so I don't forget myself. I've upset a few people because of it. Which is funny because I consider myself the dumbass and I'm just trying not to forget.
