can't faa just approve foreflight?

Uh, I'm not sure where you get that information from but that is incorrect. Once again, I'll say that I work for a 135 that has JeppFD & ForeFlight and we do NOT carry paper charts. Not NACO, not Jepp... we don't carry any paper charts. Only paper we carry onboard related to navigation is the flight plan from our dispatch vendor. We do domestic, international class I & II throughout north, central & southern Americas plus the Caribbean.

That's correct, as long as you have OpSpec A061 and two iPads with charts, paper is not required

As has been said above, it's OpsSpec controlled. We had a 6 month waiting period where we had to carry paper as backup to our assigned iPad.

Yup @CFI A&P - he's right. While you're getting it set up there are a lot of hoops to jump through. Go look in the 8900 - you can even get EFBs and STILL require paper backups if you don't carry a spare iPad.

It is such a scramble to get paper charts when you suddenly get assigned a trip in a new area. It is not like I can go to Walmart to get them and enroute charts cant be printed.
I wish the FAA would stop requiring them for 135 pilots who have an active foreflight subscription.

Get JeppView. All the paper charts you ever wanted.

Gotta love how everyone on the internet is an expert. I worked at Bemidji Aviation. Foreflight was approved by the FAA but we still had to use paper back ups. At Alpine, we don't have any EFB approved by the FAA. The chief pilot is trying to fix this. Alpine has been a good company to me so far.

By no means am I an expert on anything, I'm just an uber driver. You, @Mavmb the OP, alluded that paper charts are still required even after the the obtaining the opspec approval which is not the case.

You don't understand @Mavmb , this is company specific. No offense to your previous and current CPs, but they're lazy - it's a rather easy process and it becomes easier by the day.

Actually, not necessarily. You can get an opspec that grants you the ability to use electronic flight bag's with a paper back up – it's stupid, but theoretically you could do it. In the 8900 it explains all of the possible ways you could set up your EFB program, like I said it's stupid to do it that way but even after testing you could set up your program without a back up iPad. I know this because I have been a part of setting up electronic flight bag is at a company before. Seriously dig through the 8900 you can do all sorts of stupid stuff.

EIR, "no offense... but they're lazy"?! You must be a friggin expert on implementing an EFB program. It's not as easy as you think. The FAA made it fairly complicated. You should call Alpine up and offer your expertise. Theyre pretty cool people and would love a good laugh.

Yeah. We don’t have paper backups.

Foreflight is approved is your POI approves it in your OPSPECS.
What you seem perhaps to be proposing is exactly what the Feds don't want... a non-standardized, jumbled approach where no one can really be sure who's using what.

Anybody dumping JeppFD and getting the Jepps on Foreflight, now?
Domestically, here's a better idea... Dump Jepp. Period.

I wonder if there is a white paper out there on the number of aviators (general/commercial/military/etc) who operates with expired or rather no pubs at all due to the difficulty/cost/availability of paper pubs.

I know the Army is absolutely gawd awful at pubs control.

Be an interesting study to see and use as a hammer to drive home the point that we should be doing everything we can to embrace the technology if it makes us better.

No
I don't need my efb to tell me about local restaurants at my destination. Jepp does everything it needs and nothing it doesn't.

How is that radar overlay working out on Jepp?

What's the FBO frequency, or where is it located on the field?

What time is sunrise/ sunset ?

Where do you see NOTAMs in JeppFD?

Finding TODA/LDA in ForeFlight is in the AF/D page rather than the 10-9 but each has their own pros/cons. ForeFlight isn't just about restaurants. It has contact info for rental cars, hotels, FBOs and much more information that isn't part of the flight but still very useful. 121 operators may not care about restaurants because they are just getting into the hotel van anyway.

I did it at my previous company and I just did it at my current company. It is not a difficult process, you just need to follow the guide lines and hope your POI doesn't hate you. I'm by no means an expert, but I can read and follow directions fairly well.

Yeah jepps are overrated imo. I used them at my first 135 and will be using them at my next 121 job, but used foreflight with basic government charts at my last 135. Absolutely zero complaints....I'll take an efb with foreflight over paper jepps anyday

I'd probably get happy jitters if I got jepps in foreflight. What are the takeoff minimums? I dunno, let me thumb through a different section of the book. How about the alternate minimums? I dunno, let me thumb through another section of the book. What about the notes by those minimums? I dunno, lets read the footnotes.
