Seat width

Seat width has changed as well, and not for the better.

I'd really like to see the raw data they used to come up with the supposed width of the seats in years past, especially for narrow bodies. 737 fuselages haven't gotten any wider since 1967, and I doubt that there were any operators still flying them in 5 abreast configuration by the early 1990s. If anything, there's more elbow room on newer models thanks to thinner insulation and re-contoured sidewall panels. While I agree that seat pitch and leg/knee room has been decreasing steadily over the last 10 years, I would argue that it's not a matter of seats getting narrower but the fact that 65% load factors and empty middle seats are no longer the norm that has led to a perceived narrowing of seats, at least in narrow bodied aircraft. After all, if Southwest's seats have gotten 2" narrower over the years, why aren't the aisle's 12" wider? AFAIK Southwest has always been 6 abreast so where'd that extra room go, it's not like their planes got narrower.

On wide bodies, it is more than just perception, airlines going from 9 abreast to 10 abreast in 777s and switching from 8 abreast to 9 abreast in the 787 are using narrower seats.

Seat pitch comparisons, measuring the distance between one point on a seat to the same point on the seat in front of it, have the benefit of being a standardized measurement across different airplane and seat manufacturers. Seat width doesn't. Some measure between armrests. Some between armrest centers. Others measure the width of the seat cushions, others the seat backs which may or may not have a gap to allow for the armrest to be raised up.

Here's what I could find per the various manufacturer's Airport Planning Manuals (coach seating). All measurements are between armrests.

4 Abreast:
ATR: 16.8"
CRJ-200: 17.3"
Dash 8: 17.3"
ERJ-145: 17.3"
ERJ-170: 18.0"

5 Abreast:
DC-9: 17.9"

6 Abreast:
A320: 18.0"
707: 16.5" to 17.3"
727: 16.5" to 17.3"
737: 16.8" to 17.8" (737-100)
737: 17.0" "typical" (737-200 through 737-900)
757: 17.0" * (Only lists a 59" total width of 3 seat unit, same as shown in 737 data.)

Wide bodies:
A330: 18.0"
747: Only lists total width of various 2,3, and 4 seat units and I'm too lazy/tired to parse them all.
767: 18.0" between armrests*. (42" total width 2 seat unit, 62" 3 seat unit.)
777: 17.0" to 18.5" (10 abreast and 9 abreast respectively)
787: 17.2" between armrests*. (59.6" total width for 3 seat unit used in 9 abreast, doesn't give width for 8 abreast)

*Boeing is fairly consistent in assuming a 2" wide arm rest from the 737 onward.

So everyone is filming everything these days. I was filmed the other day after we diverted. Luckily, I didn't say anything to become the next youTube celebrity. I really wanted to ask him to stop filming. But if I had, 20 other phones would be whipped out and I'd still be an instant youtube celebrity. My airline says no passengers can video crew members, but how is that enforceable. Even though the aircraft is private property there is no expectation of privacy. Walmart, Starbucks, Jimbo's Hair Care Salon and Tire Center all are private too. There's video's of customers getting kicked out and refused service for being a jackwagon all over youTube. People generally side with the business. But when an airline refuses service to someone such as cancelling a ticket for being drunk, the airline is the horrible mean bad guy because its "my right" to fly.

I will say this. Our customer service does have room for much improvement. I still deal with nasty customer service reps on a monthly basis.
I feel like those face to face announcements from the cabin/podium are going to turn into "Roast of the Captain" videos now.

If I could differentiate between airlines on customer service and quality, I would agree. Unfortunately, I can't see a difference between the airlines in that regard. A seat is a seat is a seat. The only difference is what they charge for that seat.

Ethics I don't get. It's unethical to seek the best value for your money? Clarify please

Ethics of the seller. It matters to some people. Some people don't like to do business with companies who don't align with their ethical or moral stances.

The peanut allergy brigade got peanuts banned from most public spaces unless they're "honey roasted" and encased in sugar.

All these decades that peanuts have been being served on planes, and all of a sudden in the past 5-10 years or so, all of a sudden they need to go due to being a huge allergen?

We have honey roasted peanuts.

The strange part is that there is mashed peanuts in the carpet, air filters, underneath the carpet, traces in the beverage cart, etc.

Oh but those dont count.....the peanuts and residue all over the place in an enclosed tube with air circulating.

Only bags of peanuts that i dont want others to have. :)

What about gluten allergies?

I have a son who has celiac disease, and a peanut allergy. He is also Type 1. I know a lot about these. I've spent a lot of time talking with endocrinologists and gasteroenterologists. Most of the people who blat on about "gluten this, peanut that," are full of crap.

I hate those stupid gluters, they're always lighting one up and blowing the smoke right in your eyeballs!
Don't they know that gluten will kill you?!

There are some amazing ticket and gate agents out there, but there are also some downright crappy ones too. You kind of roll the dice when you are hiring people to be the face of your company for $10-14 bucks an hour with no experience requirement. I'm sure this ticket agent has already been fired for this PR mess. Had she slowed her roll a bit and noticed he was slurring his words and probably smelled like booze, she could have booted him for having an "alcohol like odor about himself" (can't assume anyone is drunk anymore, thanks lawyers)

We all know the only airline snack worth a damn is the stroopwafel. It's why anyone flies united. Occasionally you can get an American stewardess to provide some biscoffs, but otherwise the decline in quality of snackage is responsible for 90% of the problems at modern airlines.

Stroopwafels are pretty legit

97%, at a minimum. Unless you want to pay $6.95 for 12 Pringles, you're snacking on pretzels, and pretzels pretty much suck.
