Mountain Air Cargo ups their pay to 61K+ on the following ATR bases (BUF, SYR, MOT)

Things. They are a changin'.

Yeah and FedEx is late to the party. Their feeders are well understaffed on the caravan side and extremely understaffed on the ATR side. I saw months ago how shorthanded they were yet for some reason they though they could still get away with paying FOs 33K which is well behind regional pay and with how short reserve is at most regionals there's even less reason to go fly an ATR as an FO. They should've either put the ATRs on a 135 certificate or upped the pay to be competitive, but with how hard they're working their current crews I wonder how many people quit before Christmas and it becomes very problematic.

BUF, SYR and MOT. I don't know about SYR or MOT, but Buffalo's a really fun city. They're also offering another 3k when you complete training so I think it's actually 61K first year with the potential to earn more.

Does that figure include a sign on bonus though? So year two pay would be considerably less?

I totally agree, the times are a changing. For the profit margins involved, it seems crazy they have to be short staffed and whipping the ponies. It seems like a problem that can be solved with $$.

Yes that figure includes the sign on bonus. After year one you'd have an ATP, some money saved up and would be much more competitive than you were when you started. If you wanted to wait for your 1000 hours of 121 time to go captain it might be worth sticking around for year two. I also think it's only a matter of time before they boost annual pay again so you might catch the bonus and a pay raise shortly after.

Well, it's not for me anyway. Been doing this for 30+ years. I would need to make a living!

These bonuses are spreading like wildfire as airlines cannibalize the diminished prey group of pilots.

Always of course its incentivized, and not a contractual salary, but better than nothing I guess. I've never done the ATR side of the feed, but I did do the UPS side a long time ago, and these salaries are now double what we got paid as PIC in turbine twins to fly brown. Am hearing now that the Ameriflight side of feed is offering almost the exact deal listed above to fly a 99 or a Navajo, so Mountain isn't exactly breaking the sound barrier. Also you'll notice that the 121 pax carriers are paying these bonuses out quarterly, which seems reasonable, while this ad doesn't mention schedule. Most likely the payout is lump sum upon completion so you can lose the entire bonus after 11 months and 3 weeks of rock star performance if something goes wrong. Ameriflight appears to be doing this long-view incentive, which is a bit harsh IMO.

Nice to see the numbers moving up. Hope it isn't all just transitory.

Do you know if that includes floaters? I really want to stay in EWR and plan to work with MAC as a career. I want to fly the Caravan first and then move on to ATR.

a sign on bonus means the pay increase is only temporary

I think it's more the pay is more likely to be increased as all the Fedex feeders are hurting for pilots and unless they can get a waiver on FOs or operate 135 they'll have to raise pay sooner than later. With the bonus you might get the bonus and the pay raise when they implement one company wide.

No idea, but I was talking to some guys who are flying for Empire and seemed thrilled with the Caravan and the company. I've only heard good things of MAC so far.

"likely"

Where are they going to find the pilots? FedEx can't change their business model and start running trucking routes to make sure these packages get their overnight and I believe all freight companies are hurting for pilots big-time. I posted it as a short-term hop for someone maybe looking for 121 time and an ATP and these positions are paying better than any first year regional so if a pilot's up for only working it for a year it's not bad at all. A pilot could then take that ATP and get extra bonus money if he or she wanted to go to the regionals.

I give it 5 years and they'll be running UAS caravans at least on routes that have a precision approach on each end.

The few times I've been to Minot, it seems like a cool place honestly. I don't think I could justify going back to freight though.

What part of the job needs justification? I don't know what you do currently, just wondering about the statement.

121 regional, the job I'm in is exponentially easier than any freight gig I flew prior. Plus, these FedEx feed guys don't really log a whole bunch a year and I'm not in a spot where it would really be beneficial to bail for a less than 300 hour a year PIC gig.

Ah, okay.

Because, you know, there are plenty of "going back to freight" jobs that would be substantially better than your 121 regional job.

But, hey, FedEx pilots only fly about 500-ish hours a year, so it may not be worth it for you. :)

Honestly, I wouldn't even consider FedEx and UPS. I quickly found out that the night flying thing just didn't suit me, it takes a special kind of person. One willing to trade money for years off their life, something I don't want to do. I'm not saying they're bad jobs, just that night flying kills you. But hey, I've only made over 70K as a first year FO at a regional, so what do I know.
