UPS Flight Control Supervisor

In your experience, have you worked in a union position?

I don't know much about the hiring practices with management positions here other than to tell you that it's open to internal and external applicants.

Union/non-union's got nothing to do with it. What I'm saying is that with one exception, I've never known of an airline that filled dispatch supervisor positions from outside of the organization, let alone the company, because management wanted someone experienced with the unique aspects of the operation. In the case of that one exception, a transfer employee from another department, it did not work out well and didn't last very long.

But, if it's the case that supervisors make less than dispatchers, I'm not surprised no one wants it. Why take on more responsibility and less QOL for less money?

Actually my question about whether or not you've worked in a union position was a leading one. I was curious if you really didn't know the in's and out's of the benefits a union provides, as well as the benefits/downsides/QOL of management positions. There are so many factors to consider for one to leave a union position for management and for many, it doesn't make sense.

I guess the answer to the question is "No". While I have worked in both union and non-union shops, and can identify the differences between the two, I can't say that one was better than the other. Just different.

American and Southwest also frequently fill dispatch supervisor and management positions from outside the company. Dispatchers at both make more money than the managers and have better job security so dispatchers rarely move into management. I know at AA, the JCBA provided some protections for union members who wanted to get into management to try to get people flowing into those positions but so far nobody has moved. In fact, rumors are always circulating of managers who were allowed to join the union post JCBA that may want to come into dispatch because of the money and job security.

The position is still listed at the UPS website. I am a little surprised to have not heard anything from them. I have about 15 years in part 121 Dispatch, including OCC Manager for a Cargo Airline, and a lot of international experience. I'll have to check my application, and maybe try to network a little.
