ORD & MDW Aviation Police Officers not allowed to Carry guns ??!!

A couple years back I saw the Federales at Monterrey (MMMY) manning a bed-mounted machine gun in a pickup truck. I really wanted to take a pic but thought it best not to. Last year at HKG I saw some police with impressive submachine guns passing on the escalator. I can't imagine the threat level at HKG being that high but what do I know.

You should see the hardware the cartels have in Mexico.... Machine Guns are the little stuff. Stuff like RPGs and SA systems are not uncommon.

It's about target hardening. Bad guy sees dudes with pistols and a smile and they know it's not a very steep hill to climb to have more firepower than the good guys. Raise that bar to roving patrols of dudes with state of the art kit and now the list of potential bad guys who even have the means to go about getting that kind of hardware gets a lot shorter. It's a form of deterrence.

In no way do I want to see an automatic rifle/machine gun fight at a place like an airport. The mere concept of what a machine gun is for (base of fire superiority) means a lot of bullets moving in a general direction of bad guys indiscriminately.... not a great way to have a fight given the amount of stuff and people at an airport all of which don't respond well to being shot.

Heck, there was a cache of Redeyes found in Juarez recently...likely one of a ton there along with other stuff. Probably pilfered from the old ADA school on the other side of the line at Bliss.

Yeah I got the Intel summary that went out on that. Lot of stuff in Juarez that makes a person go wtf is going on down there.

I'm honestly surprised we and the Mexican military haven't taken more of a beating than we have.

I think it's only a matter of time.

The airport is hard work these days for the terrorist. Why would a thinking terrorist even attack an airport when there are other softer targets around the city. These guys are evil but they aren't stupid. Attacks in Orlando and Paris are just examples of how their strategy has morphed. Recent attacks in NY and NJ are just recent examples to prove my point.

Recent events in Turkey counter your point and show that an airport is quite a soft target

Airports in the US that would be considered "juicy" have significant apparatus in place and are therefore less desirable. The international scene is a little different.

It was only 3 years ago there was the gunman in LAX. It was "fortunate" that it was a targeted attack against the TSA and not just shoot as many people as you can find. The shooter was actually just sentenced to life without parole a couple weeks ago.

Yep. We struck Juarez with it in May of '47.

Went back and looked at the article a second time. I first saw a 2009 date. But now I see the 1947 date. I thought it was recent, and the first thing in my mind was wtf are we doing launching WWII era rocket for?!?

Our newspaper every now and again dips into archives and reprints articles of historical significance. This particular article from 1947 was reprinted in June, 2009.

The armored trucks in HKG that deliver money to banks and ATMs come with a guy who stands outside with a shotgun who appears he takes his job extremely seriously.

Professionalism and stance are huge in target hardening deterrence. That said you actually have to pass the smell test to people that would know better.

You see armed guys everywhere in a lot of countries but they are obviously just handed something and told "stand here and do ____." The guards at some of our digs in Manila were just a joke and I'm pretty sure the "bomb sniffing dog" was just some dudes pet from the way it was searching.

This applies in life everywhere. Watched a show a few years ago where they interviewed criminals in prison and asked them how they picked out their victims. The mugger said it was based on the stance of the mark. Head down, shoulders hunched, not making eye contact, game on. Head high, aggressive stance, making eye contact, aware of surroundings, he would let them pass on by because that person would fight and most likely had a weapon. Even if it was just a knife, he didn't want to get hurt and it wasn't worth it.

Crack head, all bets were off.

I remember visiting Thailand... all the palaces have armed guards stationed outside them. Upon closer inspection, however, none of them had a weapon with a loaded magazine. M-16s look a bit wimpy with no magazine attached.
