What kind of times are corporate flight departments looking for?

+ 1 for net working! If you have an outgoing open personality the opportunity will nearly fall in your lap. Treat the clients as you would a family member and friend. Charisma is a big part of the pick. Entertaine me and the job falls in your lap or I will put in a word to someone about you.

This is how I got "in". Im not sure how much weight my degree held here but Im sure it was an extra plus. I started out doing city tours/wine and cheese flights C-172 and did it for over a year. My reviews brought in more business and eventually long story short my boss put in a good word for me.

I should correct myself....It's not a J-O-B it is a service like waiting tables or bar tending and that is where the extra mile comes in.

Do alot of practice on this forum...most here get lost in my writing tones here though I believe :D. I'm a better entertainer in person. You got to be able to get down with Samscratch even when you are sober ;).

It certainly doesn't make it easier, but often solid resume with lots of experience will make up for it.

There ARE companies that will not look at you without a degree... It is considered a senior management position and that level requires it throughout, not just flight ops...

Agreed... I often question needing it though, the last time I sat in a classroom was over a decade ago. The positions I have held between then and now (including management) provide a better prospective of what I am now, than a degree from back then does. If somebody put a differential equation in front of me, I'm pretty sure I would have too look at it sideways before I remembered what to do with it. Somebody puts an employee disciplinary notice on my desk, and I can have a corrective action plan together in a minute. Which one matters more to a company that hires me to fly planes? Probably neither :)

I notice that most of the response seem to revolve around who you know, not what you know. Obviously you have to a certain amount of base knowledge (certificates, ratings, flight time) but after a certain amount you are as "qualified" as you're going to get. The rest of it is about the rest of you; i.e. what kind of person you are, and what other things you bring to the table besides the aforementioned certificates, ratings, and time. And of course, networking.

It reminds me of a saying I recently heard, that is attributed to Mike Rowe: "Don't follow your dreams, follow your skillset". It sounds like a good corporate pilot job is one that finds you, not the other way around.

If I had known then what I know now- an FSI copilot I would have been right after college. Crazy networking opportunity. Put in a year, get a type and then get a job. And you make more than a CFI does.

Many of my former "SIC's" are now sitting in big iron, making big money. VFR direct G550 right seat etc.

And everybody balked at me when I did that because it wasn't good it real world experience… Helped get my first job too...
