Asking for the jumpseat and other lost traditions

Thanks. This is what it says at our unions jumpseating website for B6. "Upon boarding, all pilots are expected to introduce themselves to the Captain and request permission to ride, even if assigned a cabin seat." I will pass on the new info.

Upon further review, I see the ALPA jumpseat website info mirrors the dated info my union uses for B6. I would bet our published jumpseat info is just what's put out by ALPA. I can't really push this with my jumpseat coordinator until the jumpseatinfo.org website is updated. Thanks for the info on B6 though.

Imagine a world where you were able to walk up to the gate, unlisted, and get a jumpseat…

…where company pilots could request, days in advance, said jumpseat in a first come, first served fashion.

…where there was a single method of understanding if you're to check with the cockpit or not…

Imagine...

This is a major bone of contention I have with my company. They WILL NOT list a pilot at the gate. They have refused so long they no longer know how to do it either. It's ridiculous. Almost as ridiculous as closing the jetbridge door 15 prior. We do that too. Even with checked in customers.

Sounds a whole lot like the old IS Airways jumpseat system.

Huge loss.

#southernjets and how we do things

Actually, there is. It's just that guys don't actually READ the FOM and understand how it's supposed to work.

"When offered a cabin seat assignment via the Flow Back process, introduction to the captain is not required; however, as a matter of good protocol and etiquette, it is strongly encouraged. Additionally, an earnest attempt should be made to express gratitude to the flight crew at the completion of the flight if possible."

So I don't have to check in, but but it's strongly encouraged that I do check in. But I get reminded by the captain (about half the time) that I don't have to, but the one time I didn't (and saw the captain when I was getting off the plane) I was told it was ok, but next time I should really try to check in first because it's "the right thing" to do.

That doesn't seem overly clear to me.

Not sure where the second part you posted came from, but that's not in our FOM, and as such, means nothing to me.

Again, half the time, you are encountering a captain who has no clue as to what the FOM actually says. Scary, but they're out there.

Ah... Somebody posted it in this thread and it was quoted as being from "SJI" so I assumed that was what was in the FOM there.

It looks to me like it was copy and pasted from the ALPA jumpseat guide. Where the jumpseat guide gets its info from I don't know.

All 33 pages of this thread just shows how type A we are haha!

Seriously guys, if you want to come say hi up front come on up! A simple handshake isn't going to ruin a departure brief. If we got space up front, I'll take your bag if you want. The seats don't recline but try and relax and we are glad to have you!

This isn't supposed to be that hard...

Agreed, this thread is full of the worst stereotypes of pilot fatuousness and primadonnahood.

I don't understand.

If it's in the book, that's the way it is. Case closed.

I don't have everyone else's book. I'll just continue to check in with everyone just like I've been doing. Shake hands, slap fives, etc. Come to think of it, slapping fives may become my new go to!
