WX Radar Training

I don't even want that for free.

I'm not a big fan of trying to penetrate anything. I use my phone, tethered to my tablet to get a good idea of what we are about to blast off into before we go. I never really took much notice until I started working for the airlines, and had enough sense to know that weather can be a real ass kicker.

I saw what you originally posted...

Other than incorrectly saying one should paint 8-12k (which one might want to do in a piston or 99 stuck below 10k), but not when flying between 15k and 35k at least, the avoidance I was advocating is probably pretty in-line with what @SpiceWeasel posted. Cumuliform rain showers can show as light intensity and be nasty, at least to something that isn't very heavy and/or has a stiff wing. More than 10k thick in the Caribbean is moderate turbulence almost always. Down towards VZ and the ICTZ, it can be severe, or worse. Again, to the original posters I was debating this with, we'll agree to disagree here. At the very least due to the types of airplanes we are flying...

There is a time and place to troll. General Topics, and representing a company you are management for isn't the place. That's the kind of thing that gets meetings and walking papers.
There wasn't anything incorrect in this thread other than advocating to paint 8-12k.

My management style can go to PMs if you want, but I'm not worried about my company finding most of this thread, and those that would be turned off by my comments are probably the same ones that would fly through things because "LOL FREIGHT!", we need bodies in planes, but I do NOT want to work with reckless people if I can help it...

My day is 12-14 hours depending on shenanigans. I do get PISSED at unnecessary shenanigans when the manuals and my own advice is available, in real time sometimes even. I mean, when you have a miniature lion at home... Would one REALLY want to deal with something preventable...

Were I your boss, we'd be having a talk as to why you allegedly trolled an internet forum, and painted management in a bad light. If you don't think guys haven't had to do a carpet dance because of things they've posted here before, you're being foolish.

Like I said, trolling has a time and place. General Topics, and representing your company is not one of them. When you have to preface with not being worried about " most " of the thread......

And that's no management I'd want to work under. The whole "over beers" things comes to mind.

You still don't understand why you center the beam at a higher altitude. Spend less time posting and more time reading.

You know it's weird when we agree; my favorite way to avoid these things is with my eyeballs in VMC.

Oh no, I understand. That's why I said "might".

I can only speak for the unit in the 99s here, but it's old and weak. It needs to be tilted down every once in awhile to check for antenuation, or to see if the thing is even pointing where you're telling it to.

Fair enough man.

This is what happens when you get it wrong. Been in and out of Jakarta dozens of times and one needs to be careful with the weather there.

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Thirty-one passengers and a crew member aboard an Etihad Airways flight were injured Wednesday when their plane ran into sudden turbulence as it prepared to land in the Indonesian capital, Jakarta.

The United Arab Emirates' national airline said flight EY474, which departed from its hub in the Emirati capital of Abu Dhabi, was hit by "severe and unexpected turbulence" about 45 minutes before landing at Soekarno Hatta International Airport.

The Airbus A330-200 landed safely but nine passengers and a crew member were taken to a local hospital for their injuries, Etihad said. Paramedics treated the other 22 at the airport's clinic for minor injuries and they were released, the airline said.

Haerul Anwar, a spokesman for the Jakarta airport, described nine of the injuries as serious. He said officials from the airport and Indonesia's National Transportation Safety Committee were inspecting the plane.

The airline did not provide details on the severity of the injuries, but said the turbulence was severe enough that it damaged cabin storage bins.

Indonesian Transportation Ministry spokesman Hemi Pamuraharjo said at least eight Indonesian passengers and a foreign flight attendant onboard were hurt, with several suffering broken bones.

Etihad did not immediately answer questions about how many passengers were onboard. It said the airline's planned Jakarta to Abu Dhabi flight on Wednesday on the same plane had been cancelled and the airline was assisting passengers.

Passengers onboard who spoke to Jakarta-based news website Okezone said oxygen masks tumbled out in the turbulence and passengers, including Muslim pilgrims returning from Saudi Arabia, were hurt.

"It happened when I was performing pray," passenger Nenden Nurhaini told the website. "The plane suddenly began to shake so fast."

Etihad, like its older Gulf rivals Qatar Airways and Dubai-based Emirates, has grown rapidly in recent years primarily by attracting long-haul transit passengers. Founded in 2003, it has a good safety record and last year carried 17.6 million passengers. It holds stakes in several other airlines, including Air Berlin, Alitalia and Virgin Australia.

Very likely went through the top on an embedded thunderstorm.

Found the ground track, but need to find the weather at that time.

Found one that show some significant weather at the 45 minute from landing point. Anybody with better GoogleFu?
