Reading the EK Forum @PPRUNE is an eyeopener. RT is looking there for whistleblowers.

If other Media jump on this "train" that could get really nasty for EK

I like how at the end of the article the PR manager tries to polish it over. A turd is a turd regardless and no matter what they're paying guys aren't going to deal with the crap they pull especially since everyone is starting to hire. As bad as it sounds I'm surprised they haven't had an incident where they flew past their destination or something worse.
 


Interesting to watch, can't wait to see EK's answer. The brand EK could really suffer from this discussion.

When the scuttle came out about crews here in the States making McDonalds wages, sleeping in crew lounges, and having to have crash pads as primary residences, what changed in the regional industry? Nothing. It took a crash killing 50 people to get enough momentum to change rest rules. That's what it'll take for EK as well.

I will always wonder why any pilot would want to work for an airline based in such a racist, sexist, and oppressive culture anyways... Oh, crappy rest on top of that? I'll stay at AMF if that ever becomes the only option kthanksbye. :)

Not specific to working in the middle east, but the whole issue of ex-pats in some "less than ideal" cultural environments. As long as it doesn't apply to THEM, a lot of people turn a blind eye.

There's a particular country, which I will not name, that is absolutely notoriously misogynistic and xenophobic but the expat that I talked to at the hotel bar had the perspective of "Well, I've got blond hair and blue eyes so my gig is pretty good. Must suck to be you here. Best gig ever".

Still couldn't do it. I'll step off my moral high horse and say that I do understand why some do what they do (there's serious coin to be made if you're Q400 or E170/190 typed), but (as I step back onto my well treated steed) nope, couldn't do it.
 
If you guys think US carriers don't write up pilots who call in sick, even when they have sick notes from their doctors explicitly telling them to not fly, then you're delusional. Regional airlines have been doing this crap for over a decade at least.

Towit, my recent car accident, and ensuing unapproved medication led to an attendance letter of "verbal warning" because my FMLA (I know, ridiculous I should even need FMLA for a car accident) was denied in typical rubber stamp fashion. I was sick three times in less than a year, then a car accident, and I'm now at risk of being punished, a letter in my file for attendance, because life happens. So now, if I want to be hireable somewhere else, I am forced to fly sick, at a dying regional.

Obviously it is a crappy situation, but hardly a show stopper. Would have been really nice to be treated like adults and only had the ones who deserve it to receive extra scrutiny. Hope you're feeling better

Any carrier worth it's cookies is going to know that regionals use these letters to threaten their pilot group and largely don't care.

Hell, the chief pilot threatened me with a retaliatory letter on my file because of some BS and I said, "if it makes you happy, go ahead, but make sure my legal counsel won't find it 'actionable'" because I was tired of being used as a pawn in a issue I wasn't involved with directly.

They can't just rubber stamp a denial of FMLA.

Tell that to them. Everything was filled out correctly, they have multiple messages from me, and I have yet to hear back. I've had three FMLA requests denied. One for a surgery, one for sinus infections, and now this one. With basically no recourse unless I want an attorney.
