Pilot lost gun at Philly airport

Don't leave your personal belongings unattended.

A pilot at Philadelphia International Airport went to a men's restroom Saturday morning and left his gun in an unattended bag in the bathroom, police said.

When he was finished with his business and was about to leave the restroom, he saw that his bag was gone, police said.

The pilot reported his missing gun to a Philadelphia police officer at the airport shortly after 9 a.m. He said he was in a restroom on the secure side of Terminal B when it happened.

Police said the pilot's gun has since been recovered in a janitor supply area at the airport.

The pilot who left the weapon in the restroom is trained and authorized to carry it while flying, Sgt. Eric Gripp, a police spokesman, said. Gripp said at no point was anyone in danger at the airport and that police will be investigating the incident with federal authorities.

A few flights were temporarily delayed, but flights are now back to normal, Gripp said.

The pilot's name and his airline company were not released.

That's why, if you're going to carry a gun, you carry it in a holster on your person. Or is there some rule against that for FFDOs?

I love the PPD BS statement "Eric Gripp, a police spokesman, said at no point was anyone in danger at the airport:eek:"
Yeah, right, missing gun in the secure area and everything is OK:bang:

Without getting into opsec for FFDOs, he's correct. Let's just say that the weapon is not "loosely" stored in the bag.

All I am going to say is that this is only true if the FFDO is not an idiot. I flew with one that I now regret not reporting to the FFDO people.

Do FFDOs identify themselves as such to their coworkers? I'd have assumed it would be out of sight and mind.

Janitor arrested in missing gun at Philadelphia airport
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Authorities say a janitor has been arrested in connection with a pilot's handgun that officials say was apparently taken from a restroom at Philadelphia International Airport, prompting delay of some flights.

Officials said the pilot told police just after 9 a.m. Saturday that he was in the men's room on the secure side of terminal B when he left his bag unattended, and the pouch containing his weapon was gone when he came back.

Police said the weapon was later recovered from a locked custodial closet to which only airport employees have keys. Authorities said the janitor was the only airport employee seen on surveillance video entering the restroom while the bag was unattended. Officials said he was arrested for investigation of theft and other charges.

And a few years ago...:D
The cop called to investigate the gun:def: (see the link below) didn't know how to clear it and ended up shooting the TSA lunch room:eek:

There was also an FFDO who went crazy :fury:over some traffic dispute at PHL and pulled his gun on a motorist acting like a cop and detaining him, I forgot how that ended. I can't remember all the PHL stories but boy they are plentiful.

Do FFDOs have their firearms at all times?

Every time I've been in the jumpseat and the capt was a FFDO I thought, if ish goes sidways, I'm right in the line of fire.

I don't think they are allowed to be "officers" outside of the flight deck.

They'd have to have signed on as some sort of auxiliary to their local PD or Sherrif's Dept.

Of course, they have to transport their weapon in its baby gun safe from the airport to the home gun safe & back (unless there's a convenient Janitor's Closet near the gate :def: ). Depending on state law, they may need a concealed-carry permit for that transport.

Somehow, the FFDO program seems to have been invented by the same people who thought up TSA ( the airport wannabees, not Trans States!). Not much wrong w/ it; just an ineffective attempt at doing something. Has an FFDO ever used their weapon for its purpose, rather than just having an occasional accident requiring duct tape and an entry on the MEL list?
