Western Global

Honestly the only weird thing about that story is that an MD-11 needed to stop for fuel in Zimbabwe on its way to South Africa.

I read an earlier that suggested the crew was placed under arrest. This article doesn't mention anything about them. Wonder what happened to them, paid Zimbabwe vacation?

At today's exchange rate, 1 million rand is worth $62,500.

I'd be sad about that exchange rate, but I could still use that amount of money for student loans....so uh....yeah.

You got that right! ;-)

The fuel stop was a result of inadequate communications with dispatch for a reclear. So the stop at the initial destination became necessary. They run these planes with HF only...no satcom, no acars. It was very difficult getting in touch with them via HF in various parts of Africa and South America when I worked there. Apparently the stowaway chose a packs compartment to ride in...I'm sure you can imagine what happened in there with the temperature changes. What an awful way to go... Yikes!

The crew is fine.

At my current (major) airline we run quite a few flights to and from Hawaii that way. It's a royal PITA at times. However anything truly long haul does have SATCOM/ACARS.

From the article: It appears from photos on social media that the dead person had sneaked into the plane's landing gear, which severed his arm when it contracted, causing blood to splatter onto the fuselage and arousing the suspicion of the ground crew when the flight landed here.

Gee, why would that raise suspicion? But man...talk about a rough way to go.

I heard some pretty disgusting details that I won't share here... I can't believe people are just that stupid to sneak onto an aircraft and put themselves into compartments they know nothing about. It still shocks me when I hear these types of stories.

Ewwww.....

You are so wrong dude... Lol

I somehow doubt western global pilots get catering.

For those of us not MD-11 smart, what is that door that the blood was draining out of?

I'm pretty sure it's the AC pack compartment.

Some news sources are stating that maybe someone climbed in there during a previous stop in Nigeria or Uganda. How could one of the locals doing something so zany, and who would possibly want to leave Nigeria or Uganda? This just isn't adding up...

It was Uganda...EBB actually. And yes, why in the world would anyone ever want to leave there??? ;-)
