Hats at 'Merican?

It's not that generational. My wife says the same thing, and she is in her 30's. My LAA leather jacket has served me well and kept me warm for many years, I'll miss it. FWIW, I can't ever remember flying with an 80 captain, who had "captain" on his name tag, even the CKA's.
My wife is in her mid 30's and thinks leather jackets look like crap... Do you pack your white nerd balances with light washed jeans for the layovers too?

The trench coat+hat just makes you look like your nametag should say "Col. Hans Landa" in my opinion.

An overcoat is proper outerwear when wearing a suit. Done properly, you should look like Gordon Gekko on the way to ruin some lives.
I'm still trying to find a high-quality overcoat, wool or wool-blend, conservative styling, to wear over my blazer.

Something like http://www.armstrongaviationclothing.co.uk/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=33&products_id=46 .

It's tough, and the M&H 'patriot' coat looks god-awful.

I did order the leather jacket, too, though. :P

And the hat.

So now you can see where my loyalties lie.

Hey, look... ain't nobody in the world who can deny that those guys looked sharp. You want to talk about sharp-looking professional uniforms?

Russians are known for their consistency. Spaniards... not so much so.

If you are ok with the 100% wool problems (it can be heavy if it gets soaking wet), just go to some place like Macy's and buy a black (or dark blue if that's your blazer color) overcoat. Works good, lasts long time and the uniform police are generally too busy chasing down the North Face polar fleece wearers to bother with you.
