PSA New Hire FO Classes Suspended

not to re-stir this thread....but as a possible regional candidate looking at all options....my former student said your latest seniority list showed 3 new hire FO's in that latest class.....i don't want to apply to psa and get stuck if they can't attract FO's. Maybe SKYW is the place to apply to?!

This all depends on where you are in life, and a lot of where you live. Now that PSA has announced CVG as a new base 3 of our 4 bases are basically not commutable. Also we have no bonuses are still paying <$35/hr which seems to be the new standard in the TAs coming up for vote the second half this year.

I am at PSA, and fairly happy here. There are some annoying things (displacements/SAP issues/some bad hotels/reserve grid manipulation/critical coverage), but there are good things as well. The best part is that I live in base. If I had to commute, I would likely have gone elsewhere. I think that PSA will be able to attract new hires, and will continue to draw senior FO's from other regionals to PSA with DEC slots. PSA can still use all of the other "tricks" that other regionals use when they need to in order to keep people coming in. A sign-on/retention bonus, increase flow, commuter hotels, etc... Plus, there will still need to be an additional base.

First year pay is low, there is no doubt. PSA training pay, however, is quite a bit more than most other regionals. I got paid $3000 a month during training, and had free hotels. Some of the "higher paying" regionals pay far less during training. That is something to look closely at. It has been said on here many times, hourly pay does not necessarily reflect your pay at a company. There are many factors.

With that said, my friends at SKYW love it there. They all moved to SKYW bases, and are very happy. The bases are in some really good cities, and they have a great quality of life.

If I were able to move to a west coast base, I would of gone to SkyWest. My friends there seem happy. I am currently on another month long "ELOA" from PSA right now and I can't really complain about much here. There are things that suck about it here, but it's hard to complain when I have had more time off with my family this year than I ever thought I would at a flying job.

Agreed. I spent 9 nights on the road in September, and 11 in October. Not sure about the "More Money" part, but I certainly have the "More Time Off" part. I haven't taken the ELOA, mostly because I want the block hours and the little money that I am making.

So how does that ELOA deal work? You get the still get the 75 hours of pay with no working?
Umm, no. You maintain seniority, longevity, accrue sick and vacation time, and get to keep travel bene's and medical bene's active. No pay.

Yea, I kinda figured that would be too good to be true. Is it a month to month deal, where you can come back each month if you want?

Good deal.. especially if youve got an outside deal going on. I know ive asked a couple different times and usually get a hem-haw answer, but do they care if you fly outside of PSA? Obviously not 121, but a small part 91 type deal where you get paid?

There are only a limited number of weeks/slots available for a limited number of fo's. And they are taking it on a month by month basis. I wouldnt expect this to carry on much past the first of the year. This is mainly due to a temporary slow down of aircraft deliveries. Conformity checks for newly acquired 700's from envoy taking longer than expected, and trying to get captain upgrades up to where they need to be. Word is we will be returning to 3 new aircraft per month by January. And with that, no more eloas will be mecessary.

One would need the written permission of the DO for that on a case by case basis. I would guess that yes, in this situation, that would be easy to get. But as a normal line pilot, the answer would likely be no.

Good info, thanks! Ive got a couple of little part time flying jobs for different folks I was hoping to keep while the pay is in the gutter, but I guess I need to just deal with it and just become a full time sponge and absorb every little bit of info I can over the 1st year.

My fo got his class date email yesterday for AA through the SSP. He is so lucky, because as of now, it starts back at #1. That saved him over a year waiting again probably.

@chrisreedrules, what are your thoughts on this? I know you've been at PSA for 6 months now, so you should know what's best for the pilot group like @Trip7!
I think it should have been voted down.

And if you would like to keep making personal digs at me over something I said in haste, then go ahead. Or perhaps you would like to PM me and we can discuss it in private. I would actually love to hear from someone who has been here a lot longer than I as to why you think this LOA deserved a "yes" vote.

Also, and this is second hand from the other forum... Apparently CLT will be shrinking and all the 200 flying is now going to DCA, PHL, and ORD. Or something to that effect. So for those of you who were awarded TYS and DAY and hoping to hold CLT soon keep dreaming. And for those of us who are on reserve in CLT, it looks like we will be stuck on reserve in CLT for a while longer.

Also, the round 2 lines look horrid this month in CLT. Mostly all low-credit originators. Sucks for those of us who commute.
