Dear Fellow Pilot,


This afternoon, the Delta MEC Negotiating Committee successfully reached a tentative agreement (TA) with Delta Air Lines.


This agreement represents the culmination of tremendous effort on your behalf. We have been engaged in negotiation preparation and execution for a full year, with incredible dedication from our negotiators, professional staff, subject matter experts and your elected representatives.


As a function of process within the Delta MEC Policy Manual, your elected representatives will now have TA language in their possession for seven days. We will meet, and if they approve the agreement, it will be made available to the Delta pilots for membership ratification.


I understand the desire by many to seek details of the agreement in advance, but I ask that you allow your elected leadership the ability to fully study and understand the agreement. It’s a critical step in this time-honored process of Section 6 negotiations. And if they approve this agreement, you will receive full details and language prior to voting. This will also come in the form of Negotiator Notepads, roadshows and webinars. Your elected local council representatives and Pilot-to-Pilot volunteers will be in pilot lounges to answer questions, and provide information to each of you personally. In short, you will have all the facts prior to casting your vote.


If the MEC approves the tentative agreement, it is incumbent on you to take the time needed to evaluate the agreement in its entirety. It is also important that every one of you take the time to vote. It is your responsibility to your profession and your families to participate in our process.

So as a noob to this whole industry I have a question...what is the point of saying we've reached an agreement but going to keep it a secret for 7 days before telling you the pilots about it? Is it to get talking points on the same page? Spin control?


Or is it for them to be like no not good enough to the company so the pilots don't even have to look at it?

It's all about the policy manual - or 'bylaws' - that the union operates under. For instance, in a fictitious example at Airline X... The Negotiating Committee would work under the 'direction' of the MEC, being directly supervised by the vice-chair of the MEC. But, ratification of any TA (or CBA change for that matter) requires a 50%+1 vote by the pilots. But prior to submission for ratification by the pilots the LEC's have to approve any change before it goes to a vote.

The policy manual could say something totally different, like the LEC's can approve small changes, but big changes require a pilot-wide vote. Etc., Etc...

This is a good checks and balances thing... one other way to make sure that one 'groups' agenda is not getting rammed down the throats of all pilots at a company prior to a pilot wide vote. (Which is when all the crazy spin and stuff happens anyway.)

As a new guy, ineligible to vote, I have to say it makes me a bit nervous with how quickly this was completed. I'm very skeptical about what the JV and scope language might say and with the top 50% of the seniority list gone in about ten years I wonder how far past the pay scales most pilots are going to look.
 
When did the last one become amendable? Has it been four years already?

Either way good luck, safe to say this will have a big effect on everyone industrywide.

Another reason is to allow the negotiators to fully brief the MEC on contentious issues, such as sick leave accrual at Delta so they have a full understanding before you put out a communication with complex language folks may have a hard time understanding.

You mean a physical confrontation, photo evidence, then all parties involved shake hands and attempt to say it never happened.

I had someone get angry to the point that he was getting a little potentially physically aggressive. I had to remind him that I'm 20 years younger and not from a prep school.

Yes.

But methinks it'll be a marginal pay increase, some oddly concessionary language and a "Ok, wait wait wait, hear me out. This is why it's a good deal".

My DTW reps know exactly how I feel, it's up to the other LEC's to put their man pants on.
