Tip the Damned Maid! (An article about tipping)

I load up on cash when I walk out for a trip. I'm on reserve, so I have to keep a stash in my wallet now just in case. The ONLY time I ever use cash is for tips. Or vending machines at 2 am and everything is closed. I tip servers, bartenders, drivers, and valets well. IF they do their jobs. If they come at me with an entitlement attitude expecting a tip, no dice. I waited tables at a restaurant for a while, so I know what it's like to get stiffed, but I've also seen the "Can you believe that guy? He only tipped me 5%!" Yeah, well, he saw you twice during the whole meal and I had to cover for your ass. What do you expect?

I must be a horrible, horrible person, though, because I don't tip housekeeping unless I'm staying more than a day. If I'm on vacation or an extended stay, then yeah. If I'm using the room for a 10-14 hour period where I'm going to be asleep half the time? No. I also make it a point to clean up after myself and keep the room as it was when I walked in. At some point we're gonna have to draw the line between what is a "tipped" (ie the owner pays the employees crap and the tips make up for it) position and what isn't.

Oh, and the "If you don't like it, move to Europe" excuse grates the hell out of me. Believe me, if I could get the work visa and the money to do it, I would. I get enough of that crap (and have the same response) when I get drug into political debates.....

*Unless they're being penises by picking you up at the terminal, driving to the opposite end of the airport and waiting at the FBO for a couple @Boris Badenov types to casually saunter out to the van when you're on a short layover.

Must be a policy change that allows other carrier aircrews to ride in the same hotel van. I recall being told to "take a hike" once when I stepped into the "wrong" van.

I know of no such policy for hotel shuttles.

Now private transportation like Golden Touch in NYC, that's a different story.

I've yet to see a hotel maid that I would do that to even with a gun to my head. Maybe I need to stay in nicer hotels.
I saw one in Phoenix one time that made made me think they were filming a movie, she was assisting in the cleanup of a flooded room, sadly it wasn't mine and I left two days later without seeing her again.

I drive limos as a side hustle, and I'd say that tips sometimes depend on the function and can be completely random. On average I'd say I average between 15-20%. Wedding, or birthday party? Everyone is happy to drop money like a madman. Make a casino trip and nobody wins? Well.. happy to get 10%. Sometimes it's a crap shoot and you never know. The worse feeling is when you give great service regardless of knowing what you'll get tipped and you get stiffed with nothing or something like 5% on a 600 dollar tab (money is money though..). Either way it's been a pretty awesome side hustle/job. Since I've started driving I've made sure to tip at least 15% to other driving services. Last time I did that with Uber in Wichita the dude was thrilled.

Don't you add a % to the bill right off the bat? Here in NJ the companies add 15%-18% for tip. If I get reasonable service I'll add about 10% but on a ride to the airport the driver's already getting his/her wage and $20 bucks from my bill.

Okay, here's something else that wasn't mentioned. If you're getting an airline discount on something, tip based on the ORIGINAL amount instead of the discounted amount. Part of the reason we get eye rolls from some service employees is because we're such cheapskates on discounts, and then THEY get gipped out of a tip.

Wait, are you supposed to tip on Uber? I always thought it was an all-inclusive thing.

Why would you not tip an Uber driver?

You're really not supposed to. It does happen, though. @ATN_Pilot

As a rule - you are NOT supposed to tip Uber drivers - the gratuity is built into the service. That being said, I've seen plenty of UberX drivers angle for tips before.

I don't use UberX.

I do, however, use Uber Black. On two occasions early on I tried to tip Uber Black drivers and both times they adamantly refused and said they could get in trouble for it. I had happy-hour beers a few weeks ago with an employee of Uber corporate who corroborated this as well so that was good to know.

Okay, I always use Uber Black, so that makes me feel better. Thanks.
