PSA phone interview

What is the initial base with PSA? I live in Louisville and would like to drive if possible!!!! Thank you!

The bases are: Dayton OH, Knoxville TN, or Charlotte NC. I think you can hold any base you want at by end of training.

That is great to know. Thank you. I figure a drive to and from DAY from Louisville would not be bad as long as the trips are worth it (more than 1 day). Thoughts???

Driving to work is ALWAYS better than commuting. I make the drive from Cleveland and it does get old, but man am I excited that my car doesn't delay, mechanical or cancel for no reason whatsoever.

I used to pray my car would mechanical on the way to work! On the way home though is a completely different story.

I'm finding it harder and harder not to chase a quick upgrade.
Worked for me years back. If you can upgrade and checkmark a 1000tpic box they send you a decoder ring in the mail for all future interviews. @Trip7 didn't need it but for the rest of us mere mortals it's helpful getting your foot in at places.

Riddle me this:

If there are FOs upgrading at PSA in 1 year because people senior to them don't have enough 121 time, what happens when all those guys begin to hit the minimums to upgrade?

There is a good chance that many if not most of the current guys who are upgrading will displace back to FO as guys senior to them begin to upgrade. Same thing if they start to hire street Captains.

A company is not going to displace a Captain just because a senior guy now has the time. Once that person gets their time they would be able to bid for upgrades as they come. Now I don't work at PSA but I can't imagine they would do that. Now once those senior people upgrade the junior Captains stay where they are or nove back in Capt seniority.

Depends on the contract. At TSA our contact prevents hiring street captains. We can only hire cqfo, which means you can seat fill as a captain. But our contact says that a bypassed fo must be given a chance to upgrade within 6 months. Also there has to be a certain amount of fo's in a class. So the company cannot hire a whole bunch of cfqo and stop upgrading on property fo's. So as more on property fo's are upgraded, that will push the cfqo to full time FO status, until their seniority can hold a captain upgrade.

Also most contract provisions about bypassed upgrades are for people who can legally hold a Capt position and the company decides to train someone junior before that person. If the person voluntarily bypasses or cannot because of time they are not considered bypassed for pay purposes. Recently saw another thread mention this.

So what you are saying is that current FOs who are eligible to upgrade but are below the minimums won't be allowed to upgrade when they do hit their 121 minimums?

That doesn't sound right. It's not as if they voluntarily bypassed the upgrade. But I could be wrong.

Why would a company pay for 2 training events once they are fully staffed on the Captain side? If a guy doesn't meet the requirements the first time around and gets bypassed, too bad so sad. It's all about $$$$

It's a seniority issue. Perhaps someone like @ATN_Pilot can shed some light on this, but if your seniority can hold it and there are vacancies you can't be withheld. The company's hands are tied.

Unless of course there is something in PSA's contract that specifically says you won't be eligible for upgrade if you are bypassed for ANY reason. Otherwise, if your seniority can hold it then you can bid it.

I don't think you understand what I am saying. I am saying if you don't have the time and by the time you do and upgrades stop because the left seat is fully staffed, you will have to wait until there are vacancies via normal attrition. Which could take awhile. Just because you one day reach the time the company won't displace a Capt who is junior to you on the list just because you are now eligible. Your original question was what happens to the FOs once they have the time finally. The answer? Most likely stay an FO for awhile.

I agree about that. My original point was assuming that upgrades were continuing. By the time all the withheld FOs upgrade a bunch of current upgrading CAs may get displaced back to FO.

That is what I'm driving at.

Gotcha. Well they won't displace, costs too much money. They would just say sorry guys there are no more vacancies needed. Better luck next time, should have flown more. Example, someone voluntarily bypassed upgrade for QOL, but then the company stops upgrading. They then say I WANT TO BE A CAPTAIN NOW. Well they won't upgrade them until there's a vacancy even though They are senior to everyone else almost. They will not displace anyone to upgrade someone else, it's that simple.

You are correct, but the key to your quote is "and there are vacancies." You can't displace someone who already holds the bid, you can only take a vacancy that opens up. So if there are no vacancies, then you have to wait until there are. Now, once you get that vacancy, you'll be senior to the junior guy who upgraded before you, so he gets pushed down the captain bid list, but he can't lose his seat just because you hit the time.

No. They won't. No property does it that way. People bypass upgrade all the time for QOL reasons and when they decide to eventually take it, they go in with good seniority but they sure as hell don't ever displace somebody out of seat. The only time you get bumped out of your seat is due to reductions in flying and displacement language.

Yeah, makes sense. This is all new because I have never seen a situation where junior guys were upgrading because more senior ones didn't have enough flight time. That is uncharted territory.

I was thinking of how base displacements work. If enough people get displaced from one base to another they could bump junior guys out of that base. Assuming that base doesn't grow by the net amount of displaced pilots.

A vacancy NEVER displaces pilots. That's why it's called a vacancy. A displacement or realignment bid can, however. I suppose a "multi-class bid" can as well, but I think that's an Endeavor JCBA-ism.
