"Economy Minus"

A US legacy airline is shopping around the idea that it’s planning to create an “economy minus” cabin in a move to a new model of domestic four-class service.

RGN spoke extensively and off the record with the airline at the recent APEX Expo in Anaheim, California. The front-to-back domestic US model mooted to us would comprise a premium cabin, enhanced economy, regular economy and “economy minus” offering.

The big economy change — which may well be a fishing expedition to provoke comment in the industry or see whether its two primary competitors are interested in showing their hands — would be truly groundbreaking if implemented. Economy would come in three flavors – enhanced economy with around the 35-38” pitch range, regular economy at 30-31”, and the new “economy minus” at 30” and below.

It doesn't sound like a terrible idea. Then you factor in the people that would pay to do this are the ones that already can't sit in a standard economy seat without spilling over the sides to their neighbors.

Hell, a section of uncomfortable seating full of large land mammals no drink service would reflect half the United flights I've been on.

Pax already whine and complain about seats so I dont see it happening, especially at a legacy. With airlines like JetBlue and SWA moving into their territory, it doesnt sound like a wise plan.

I am extremely thankful that my company changed up my territory to where I don't have to fly anymore...all of my area is covered by car/train.

It's been a pretty lousy experience for years as a passenger unless you were in First or Business class. JetBlue has been better on a lot of flights, but by and large the whole experience sucks.

This will cost the airline 50% less than what they offer in the economy cabin, so they'll charge 10% less than what they charge for the normal economy cabin. And money keeps trickling up.

God help me for saying this, but one of the best economy class rides I've had in recent memory was on one of our Delta paint -900s in Economy Comfort.

The -700/-900 depending on configuration and the 175 are actually very comfortable airplanes.

The 170/175 product is EXCELLENT. I'd much rather be on one than a 737 or 320. At least until I start thinking about who is sitting in the right front seat. :D

which is about as pleasant as a lobotomy without anesthetic.

Well, that explains it.

Only complaint is the windows are so awkwardly placed that you have to lean forward just to look outside.
