Is it wrong to go to the limits of a rule?

4chan skills engage.

Really now? Cool, dude. I just spend my per diem on it.

If you're itemizing. Absolutely.

Now if I could just convince the facebook/internet pilot wives around the world that per diem is for your expenses and NOT necessarily income, we could actually eat healthfully instead of like a junior high schooler with a lunch box.

I spend almost all of it. If I don't, I get hangry. And that's not good at all.

The lunchbox is more of a "schedule driven" thing for me.

I couldn't do this job without the cooler. I'm not entirely sure how much money I save, but I certainly eat much, much better with it.

That's awesome.

We're still working out the differences between a three day international trip where I'll have buy a lunch on day one, eat crew meals that evening and the next morning, one or two meals day two and a breakfast on day three compared to a three day domestic where you're wallet-to-mouth for up to nine meal periods.

I'm just going to eat when I'm hungry.

Eat when you're hungry, sleep when you're tired, drink when you're thirsty, excrete when you're full. The four basics of life!

I would love to get access to it and just peek around a bit.

I stopped logging in. Blows my mind reading some of the posts on there. The crazy conspiracy theories are pretty intense though. Some people fly way too many red eye transcons.

I am dying to see this.

Conspiracy nuts are awesome, but they're like In-N-Out Burger: It's awesome for a snack, but it's not like I want one on my OWN street.

I stopped for a while. Then I got bored sitting reserve. It's actually pretty entertaining as long as you KNOW these guys are full of it. The scary thing is, they actually think they're right. Lucky for me hardly any of them are MCO based.....

I love how some guys start going off on how they've spent tens of thousands of dollars because of our insurance. Either they're stupid and going to out of network doctors (likely) or they're inflating their numbers (also likely) OR the insurance company messed up and they're just more interested in being keyboard commandos than picking up the phone (not as likely, but definitely possible). I've gotten to know our insurance ins and outs over the past year. Intimately. Like volunteering for the R&I committee intimately. Doesn't matter how many facts, figures, charts and links to company and insurance websites I toss out. They KNOW what they're talking about fo sho.

I gave up trying to insert nuggets of actual facts. I've devolved into either reading with a nice cold Bacardi and Coke or lobbing grenades to see if I can move up in seniority.

My favorites when it came to insurance were always the guys who wanted us to pass up millions of dollars worth of overall improvements just because they needed us to stay with the old plan so they could keep their favorite doctor instead of going to one of hundreds of other options within a few mile radius who were equally qualified.

Pilots?

Groupthink?

Are there also pilots who "invest" in HSAs because the guys at the unit say they're 't eh awesomez' without understanding that they'd probably be better off with a HRA that then complain when they have to dip into it?

It's even more complex than that here. With our plans, everyone gets a certain amount of "seed money" depending on if they're single or family accounts. It goes into an HRA. There's a second HRA that the company puts money in when you accomplish certain fitness goals during the year, like getting an eye exam or a hearing exam or running a marathon, etc. If you're on one plan, that's it. You can set up a Flex Spending Account with your own money, but you can't toss any of your money into the HRA. If you're on the more expensive premium plan, you can set up an HSA and put the money in that way. This is the point when people start to look at me with their eyes crossing, and I haven't even gotten to the differences between FSAs and HSAs and HRAs.

I go with the cheaper premium plan not because of the lower premiums, but because of the loophole that if one family member hits their deductible/out of pocket max (or max co-insurance as it's called here), then they're good for the rest of the year. It's my wife that needs all the medical stuff, so we save about $2000-4000 that way. If we were on the more expensive plan, we'd have to hit the FAMILY dedictible/max co-insurance instead of the individual before the real benefits of the plan kicked in.

See, this is why it pays to read the fine print and pay attention to the details for each individual pilot. SOOOO many guys were telling me to go with the more expensive plan because "It's better." They only thought it was better because it cost more. In reality, the people on that plan are probably saving the insurance company thousands of dollars each.....

Is it just costing the company money or is it also screwing over your fellow brothers and sisters? If it is just costing the company money, thats fine -- maybe they will have to expend some negotiating capital to curtail the activity next time in negotiations. If it is screwing your fellow pilots over somehow, I might feel bad about that.

For example, while working at Mesa I did not feel that good about people who picked up open time on Flica while a lot of people I knew were furloughed. But at the same time, we were paid so little I couldn't get that mad at them trying to make a little extra money.

In this case (with the open time), it's not really screwing anyone over OR costing the company money. The company will have to pay someone to fly it regardless (unless it goes to a reserve, so they're HOPING it stays in open time) and we don't get premium pay unless they say "We're offering premium pay for pick ups on X day." So, really I don't see a problem with it. It's just someone was faster to get to FLiCA than someone else. What they do with the trip is up to them, and the odds of them getting stuck with a trip they didn't really want is pretty likely. If they wind up dropping it, then the other person who wanted it will still have a chance to snag it.

It's not the ideal situation, but the person doing the complaining that they didn't get the trip is about like someone complaining they didn't get the last "Tickle Me Elmo" at Toys R Us around Xmas time.

"Don't screw your teammates" is right up there on the list of rules with "don't hit anything" and "don't do anything stupid," in my opinion.
