I fly with plenty of captains out here who brief, "if we lose an engine after V1 we'll yada yada yada, come back around, land, go get another airplane and try again." They are all ex military. Take that however you want. I don't bother correcting them during the brief, but you can be sure as hell that I'm not going back up again after something like that. Fortunately, when I did have an engine go a few months ago the captain had no plans of continuing on afterwards so it wasn't an issue, although the company did tell us they had another plane for us to take while we were taxiing in.
On the topic of calling it a day after an unusual event.
I declared an emergency last year on arrival into MSP after a circuit board with a bunch of stuff went on strike at FL180. Partial brakes, partial spoilers, no nosewheel steering, throttles & A/P gone, one MCDU out, etc. The big one was partial brakes and nosewheel steering...had to stop on the runway. Ended up sitting on 12R for 45 minutes waiting for a tug, right in the middle of the 9PM outbound rush. A 757-300, two A330s, and a 767 all waiting at the end to use the longest runway due to their weight. And there we are, just waitin' for a tug, windows open shooting the __ with our MX guys, who are down there in the dark standing by the centerline. Bizarre sitting on an active runway that long when it so badly needed to be used.
Anyway, scheduling did the right thing and actually asked us before we needed to bring it up, if we wanted to call it a day and overnight in MSP instead of continuing on to Edmonton. We chose to do that, cabin crew included, and they said they'd conjure up another crew.
After we finally got towed in, of course as it goes the Edmonton gate was directly across from where we'd arrived. Funny to walk past and hear them making an announcement about how the inbound crew was late and everyone was moaning but generally cool with everything (because they're from Edmonton). We just chuckled and walked on by and said what can ya do.
