Delta pilot, Captain Happy, loses it on ATL ground

The simple solution is to ask ramp tower which runway for your departure. Takes the guesswork out of the equation.

Meh I've done this, taxied a little bit north, then done the 180 because of a runway change, got all the way to the south and been asked to switch again... So that's 3 runway assignments.. Maybe they're just playing with the Acey's in UA colors? :)

Huh. the official colors are "Canyon Blue," "Desert Gold," "Warm Red," … and "Orange."

They really could have tried harder w/ that last one. Maybe they're saving it's name for when they go trans-atlantic and it'll be "Kaaskop Orange" or "King Billy Orange."

Anyway I heard they're thinking about changing the blue to "Mountain Majesty."

Probably has nothing to do with the asinine one way traffic layout of the north ramp that is nothing like any other hub......

Can't be that....must be PSA:rolleyes:

So, because of the ramp layout, that's why pilots act unprofessional?

It is PSA...probably an occasional Mesa. Rarely AWAC. Remember the old north ramp with piedmont employees running the tower vs mainline? It would go something like this during a major push time where it was asses and elbows:

"Ramp, blue streak 542, push E5..."

"Blue streak off of 5, push is approved..."

"Ok, we are pushin...hey! Bill!!...where were you this weekend??"

"Ohh you know, just working..."

"Ok! We missed you out at the BBQ, but hey, you will be invited next time too..."

"Ohh yeah, sorry I missed that, I'll see if I can't get off for the next one..."

"Sweet, we will see you there...and we are cleared to push 5"

This all going on while guys are attempting to key the mike repeatedly. This is just one of the things you would here on a REGULAR basis. Never mind the guys who would mock other pilots when they messed up or said something stupid. Totally tie up the freq saying dumb crap back and forth to each other. You don't hear that foolishness up in PHL, DCA, or LGA. We all have our respective unprofessional people working for them, but the main operators in CLT take the cake. Most unbelievable think I've ever seen.

I can't remember if we were given four changes, or if we took off on the fourth runway assignment, but rest assured I had to reload the box every bloody time. We basically ended up taxing from the north side to the south side and it was continually reassigned.

I don't have very good luck in ATL, it's happened more than once.
The departure runway assignment that makes us shake our heads, at the TRACON, is when the tower goes to trip departures. These unfortunate airplanes end up taxiing longer than had they waited at 27R, but the tower calls the departure split.

Most of the time, it is a NW/SE split which means if you are a north (Cokem, cadit, nuggt, summt) or a west (jogor, jckts, rambln, geetk) you will be assigned 8R or 26L. Everything else will go to the south side. If the N/W proposed departures are slow, then DAWGS will depart the north side to try and even out the departure times of the north runway and the south runway.

I think the biggest thing from a pilot perspective about ATL is if you don't go there often. From a planning side, it seems like every time I go there, and lets say they're in west flow and we're doing the DAWGS, everyone wants to think that we'll do a 26L departure. Yet, most of the time they'll send you off 27R. Then you get those odd times where they'll switch you back to 26L. So I could see where @jtrain609 is getting at. Maybe they might only switch you once, maybe twice. But you had to program the box an extra time or two because of what you anticipated vs. assigned, and then changed.
This doesn't happen 100% of the time for arrivals, but it might help you guys in planning... If ATL is on an east operation and you're inbound from the northwest, expect 9R when there is a bad weather or a busy flying time of the day, especially if you're assigned the BNELE arrival. Rarely does the BNELE arrival go to 8L. If you're assigned the KOLTT arrival and the weather is nice (ceilings higher than say 5,000 feet) expect 8L. If it is bad weather, you have like an 80% chance of going to 9R because the guys from the northeast arrivals will go to 8L.

Yea, that sounds like a horribly unprofessional radio call. It is absolutely forbidden to have a personality. It's NEVER AWAC though, right? You are all unswerving professionals, every time, all of the time. Just like.......Delta. O wait, I must've forgotten why this thread was started in the first place.

And yes, the ramp itself creates the mess because it frustrates people, often with no explanation. One way traffic for 50 gates and an adjacent taxiway that is unusable 50% of the time is not an acceptable situation and has no parallel on the east coast.

I'm sure you've heard a PSA guy being a morn, but I've also heard Mesa, Piedmont, and yes, even the high and mighty ultra professional AWAC pilots being just as stupid.

Can I just fly the airplane, please?

Until recently CLT wasn't nearly as bad congestion wise. They opened those new gates only what, a couple years ago? Yet there was a bunch of farting, "stuck mics" playing music during push, ridiculous commenting, etc. before.

Well, unless the guy already has a rep this sort of thing out of the blue can be an indicator of much more serious things than waking up on the wrong side of the bed. E.g, the pilot on the fedex flight a few years back that was videoed extending the gear at about 200' on final...captain had totally frozen up due to a previously undiagnosed brain tumor. Now if this cat already has a reputation, he's probably past saving...
@Roger Roger I'm not sure if I missed what you're getting at here, but my understanding of the Fedex Example is the the FO, realizing he had a potential medical emergency on his hands decided to drop the gear and land instead of going around. I don't recall if there was a thread on this or not.

Right, my point was stuff like this if totally out of character can be an indication of something seriously wrong. Or the guy could just be a jack wagon.

Apparently you are too new to remember what the ramp in PIT was like. Or what the ramp in PHL was like before the new terminal. Or perhaps the CLT ramp right after a lot of PHL flying moved down there. Or the Big Boy ramp (right at the beginning of the merger with AWA).

When given the opportunity, every company is equally as likely to be "unprofessional" on the frequencies, especially when they are non FAA controlled.

Is there any way to get this stuff to airlines for their 10-7 pages? Not that the airlines have to take them, but information like this is hugely informative.
