Life At Spirit, anyone?

bucksmith

Did you lock the doors?
Do we have any JC'ers that could comment on the latest and greatest at Spirit? Future growth, mergers/acquisitions, current and future QOL. That bidding system seems to be a key to making some money. Will it stay around, or will it be lost in concessions?
Seems like a very good LCC to keep an eye on. My friend told me that his roommates cousin was thinking about going to the airlines someday, so I just thought I'd pass on some info for him.

My friend's roommate's cousin tells me that there is an aggressive fleet plan: http://ir.spirit.com/fleetplan.cfm

The negotiating committee has some new blood and the advantage of the sharks that worked so hard for the current contract which is in effect through July 2015. Survey will go out soon. No one knows about mergers or acquisitions but the BOD. QOL is high on our list of items to retain, specifically the guaranteed 4-5 days off between trips.

That's a great link, thanks! Beats sifting through all the speculation and dribble on other forums to get all that info. Speaking of speculation and dribble, :ooh:, I have heard the hiring process is bogged down and employees can't even get internal rec's into HR. I was told by somebody trying to get on (not my friend's roommate's cousin, btw) that it is about an 8 month process right now. Any truth/reason for that? Would that continue into the future?

I have pretty much given up on Spirit, and that is not easy for me to say/do. I've been pursuing Spirit for a while now, because it is one of my top choices to move on to for my own personal reasons, and I already live in a Spirit base. The hiring process is quite frustrating, mostly with the implementation of the requirements to attend a Spirit job fair now. I have one good contact there who keeps me updated and wrote me a great LOR. Apprently HR has established an e-mail adress where current pilots can send LORs, but you will never receive a receipt or confirmation.

I think Spirit is in a good position with a bright future. I think their business model is genius, and you can tell by the profits they are pulling in. The pilots I encounter along the way all seem happy and enjoy what they do.

Well, MFRC (my friend's roommate's cousin) isn't in any hurry to move, I wonder if anybody thinks this will improve?
When is the next job fair?

April 25, but it is already sold out. Next one after that is November in FLL.

How is Spirit dealing with the Frontier purchase? An outsider looking in gets worried and sees whipsaw potential.

They do have a great business model. I wonder if the majors are looking at copying it to an extent. Ie have first class and then fill the back up like Spirit does. 219 seats on a 321, holy heck!

Spirit and Frontier are mutually exclusive (at least for the foreseeable future ;)). The company that originally bought Spirit and turned it into the ULCC it is today, Indigo Partners, completely divested itself of the business last summer (July 2013). That same team went on to buy Frontier from Republic to apply the Spirit model. Now, if they were to consummate sometime down the road, who knows. . ..

Your not the only one who feels that way.

Hiring is not "clogged"; it is happening. They have hired about 200 pilots in the past 9 months at least by looking at the seniority list. It's not an easy process. They have hired those who went to job fairs, those with internal recs, those who knew no one. It's all over the map. But if you read posts about other majors, it's not exactly easy anywhere.

Pilots really know nothing about it. It's frustrating, but true.

That seems to be the consensus at most of the Majors. Delta seems to have the most predictable hiring but that is likely because of the massive amount of flows and guaranteed interviews they have to entertain before street hires.

I'm just sad I can't go to a Spirit career fair because I don't have the total time they want. I can check every other box they have other than the A320 type. Doh. Oh well. I'll be there in less than a year.

Gotcha...
Wow, 200 pilots, must be nice to have been in front of that wave...

Speaking of total time, suppose Spirit will follow suit with Virgin and Frontier, lowering their TT requirements?

There is a difference between Spirit and those two. Spirit is a way better place a work.

Also, they instituted a requirement for 500 TPIC for their job fairs so I can't imagine they are hurting for pilots quite yet.

No, you don't get it. There were about 450 pilots on the property when we went on strike in 2010. The first new hire class after the strike was 1/2011. They are now CA's because there are over 1,000 pilots on the property now.

I haven't seen many low time people lately. There are a lot of high time CA's and FO's who got laid off from World, etc. They are great folks.

Any idea how many are leaving after a year or two? It sucks but a few of the CA that left Eagle got the bus type and a few hours and jumped ship , only one FO I know jumped to AA after a very short time there.

There seems to be no stopping Spirit at this point. They will grow unchecked just like RyanAir in Europe or a Southwest 20 years ago.
