US Airways Pilot Keeps American Pilots Off His Jumpseat

I thought you didn't practice shouting down/shaming/bullying outside of this forum (with your coworkers).

Actually, I didn't say that. I just said that no one here is my coworker, and we aren't at work.

Suffice it to say that while I don't believe in unprofessional behavior in the work place such as shouting at people, I don't have any problem with other methods of trying to influence the cowards in our midst. Peer pressure, ridicule, etc. are powerful motivators for those who need motivation to stay unified. For example, listing non-members and delinquent members is something that I've always supported. You'd be amazed how quickly most people will pay their dues when their name gets posted on the crew lounge wall.

It's a coward who would write a name on a wall and not address the individual directly.

Yeah, because friendly conversation will convince the wannabe SCABs not to cross a picket line.

What color is the sky in your world?

Adults are going to do what they're going to do. How is it your place to stop them? They want to make a bad decision, who made you their big government mommy? Best thing you can do is advise them calmly. If they choose not to listen, then that's on them.....as adults. And too Todd, by the time you have to resort to shouting, then they've long since made their mind up with what they want to do.

Right or wrong though it may be, their own decisions are what they have to live with.

You'd better conform, or you will be crucified. You'd better think the same way I think, and vote the same way I do, or you will be burned at the stake.

This is where thinking like this leads.

People can only be led to water. If they choose to make bad decisions, that's on them.

Your "boy" SE @ 9E sure helped unity. We need to turn down FO raises (but base bonus on W2). No one bid for the CRJ 900 (well except me, I'm chairman).

No one is perfect.

No one's name gets written until they've already been addressed directly (and politely) and it produced no results. Which, of course, proves my point. Friendly conversation does nothing to convince these scumbags. But as soon as they get called out publicly, they fall in line pretty quickly.

Their bad decision ruins other people's lives. Not acceptable. Sorry, we aren't going to agree on this one. Maybe if you'd lived in a neighborhood full of striking pilots and watched their families get torn apart because of a bunch of SCABs you'd have figured it out.

You are single handedly convincing me I've made a mistake in my decision to vote yes to ALPA.

I saw the aftermath of the Arizona mine strikes back in the 80s, go look that one up Todd. Big moment for organized labor. To this day, families and extended families won't talk to one another in the towns of Clifton/Morenci.

But still, you can't force people to do anything, much less make bad decisions. At some point, if they are determined enough, you have to let people make their adult decisions and simply advise them the consequences of it. Beyond that, trying to control them will only backfire.

Human nature 101.

So far as forcing people to conform to thinking......Jim Jones had an opinion on that down in Jonestown in '77.

Meh. I know that's the standard line, but I still find bullying reprehensible among people who claim to be professionals.

That's cool. You go find a SCAB that is a "professional" and I'll reconsider bullying them.

And just so people are clear, in my 5 years as a captain at my previous gig I only had the pleasure of kicking out ONE guy who was on the list.

But boy did I have fun with that.

There will be no shouting down or bullying on my forum.

Non-negotiable.

I'll actually debate people about that. My moderators? They'll slam dunk a quibbler and finish their taco.

You have the list / check it for jumpseaters...?

Scabbing is low. My heart sank when I saw my buddy's dad on the list.

Not that I'm involved in whatever vote you have going on...
I grew up in a union family, I'm a pretty big supporter, but reading ATN's posts... I'm not sure if anyone could sway me against more than reading what he's posting.
I think if I were on the fence and I read this thread I'd come away with not only a no, but an F NO!

Just some thoughts from the peanut galley with no dog in the fight. Remember you're reaching a much wider audience than the people at your airline or other ALPA members and there's probably a good share of them that are going to end up voting on or in a union at some point in their career. With any luck, myself included.

I agree they aren't professionals, but I'm talking about us. Professional pilots, acting like bullies and schoolyard children.

I'm all for preventing them from jumpseating. But you can do it as a professional, not as a bully or jerk.
