We better all slim down

Hopefully there will be an exemption for the outliers who have a high bmi from spending too much time in the gym.

And hopefully someday a cure will be discovered for those who have a high bmi from not spending enough time in a gym.

You've got to be kidding me. This is utterly ridiculous!!!!

Further, given the current predicament the government is in, how the hell do they plan on paying for and implementing this?

Don't you know by now? The RICH will have to be made to pay- and everybody knows, all pilots are rich.

I have always found the health conundrum for transportation professionals like pilots and commercial drivers perplexing. You have to be healthy enough to pass a medical certification exam in order to keep working and yet the very nature of many of these jobs are primarily sedentary, involve erratic sleep schedules, and frequent meals out which doesn't exactly add up to a healthy lifestyle.

Don't get me wrong, it's possible to live a healthy lifestyle on the road, but ironically it's more difficult to do so for the people who need to in order to continue in their profession than it is for those who spend every night at home.

Do you realize you cannot get a BMI from putting in your height and weight input on some site on the internet?

I have a 24.4 (so called number). How is this accurate? I have no idea. I'm 185lbs 6'2''. I had a 13.7 BMI in high school when I was 6'2'' 300lbs. This makes absolute no sense.

Accurate or not, how do you think the AME's are going to calculate it? Same way.

Oh, and 29.3

Maybe it's about time to re-think this whole medical certificate business. What's the actual proof that medical certificates do anything at all to make aviation safe.

I think there is quite a few pilots out there that would be screwed if this takes effect. I have seen lots of pilots that should lose some weight, but just because they are overweight doesn't mean they are more of a health risk then the super skinny guy addicted to cigs. And there is a huge different between being fat and being obese.

I honestly think this should be more of a professional thing, if I walk into the airplane and see the pilot struggling and sweating to sit down because he is 400 pounds, yea it makes me uneasy. Not because he might get a heart attack or something, but because if he doesn't care enough about himself, why should he care about me in the back?

As far as airline pilots go, this is absolute rubbish. I have far more time to focus on physical activities now compared to when I was doing the 8-5.

Yeah...it's called getting off the couch. Not accusing you, but it seems there are way more people who just "want to take a pill" to be healthy rather than actually live a healthy lifestyle.
While I agree with the general premise if your thought the problem lies with a "healthy" lifestyle being much much broader than being an aerobic bunny. Fat does not equal unhealthy.

I feel this probably sounds harsh towards you exneophyte, I should have worded it better. I just get frustrated with how many times I hear stuff excuses from crews on trips, even on a long layover. It's not that hard to stay in shape on the road... Yes, hotel gyms suck. But there are a lot of great workouts one can do with minimal equipment, even in a hotel room. I have a jump rope in my bag too. Takes up no room, and it's an awesome cardio workout. Another time I was stuck inside a hotel in Canada during a snowstorm, so I did a butt kicking workout by running floors of stairs, etc. Where there's a will there's a way!

You are right that it's an excuse a lot of the time, however not all pilot jobs are created equal with regards to schedules and availability of healthy foods.

Is that based on a private insurance plan you have against losing your medical? Or would that be paid by your airline?

<== military dude who does not know the ins and outs of this part of the profession.

Paid by the airline. It's in our contract. The sleep study would also be covered if it's part of a required medical evaluation. Union contracts are a great thing.

This is the best news I've heard in a long time.

Do they pay for your medicals? Or just the EKG part?

Don't take this the wrong way, but wouldn't it be best for your overall health not to have to medical out?
