Latest Delta Rumors

I would make updating your times a monthly event. Not only will it keep your app active, it shows that you are actively interested in interviewing.

When you think about it from an HR perspective, what easier way is there to cull the herd so to speak than to check who is actively applying? For those who take the time to do it, you should be encouraged to know that a HUGE percentage of applicants don't. It's airline pilot Darwinism. I think the constant regional capt bitching during various hiring spurts was reason enough for me to avoid crew rooms in EWR, IAH, and CLE.

It's true. The loudest voices bitching about stagnation have usually done nothing to move up the food chain.

"Arr rabble rabble!"

"Dude, have you even applied for [employer of choice]?"

-awkward silence for remainder of leg-

"No, I'm special! I want to sit on my widening ass and have the best airlines send me offers like George Clooney gets scripts! This is so unfair! I got trophies in soccer just for showing up!" ;)
That is not, unfortunately, how it works - although I have had more than one side offer come up ("Outside commercial flying is prohibited..."), I had to go and seek out all of my other gigs.

I'd rather not point out their flaws. It makes it easier for the rest of us with extensive professional backgrounds outside of flying around metal tubes, advanced degrees (or multiple advanced degrees), clean flying history, and a positive outlook.

I encourage the types who complain, to complain more. The faster they stroke out or finally give up, the sooner some of us who with positive attitudes can depart for better environments.

Unless they're at my current employer, then please FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THAT'S HOLY apply to UAL/Delta/FedEx or wherever. Hell, I'll boot up the website FOR you. The stuff I hear from the constant kvetching over here gets old. It's not like we were industry leading in 2001-2006 when these guys came here, so I don't know why they think magic will make it happen. Some of the guys are so surly and insulting, it actually HURTS the improvements we're trying to make since they turn so many people off. I finally logged onto our company pilot forums. Less than 5 minutes later I was regretting that decision......

I don't even get it.

Most of those people came from places that were broken, many voluntarily, to a shiny new company with new airplanes, many political blessings and a beautiful terminal.

I can see angst when progress isn't happening at a pace consistent with effort, but knuckle-dragging surly? How good do those people think we have it over at a legacy?

I am always amazed at the lack of preparation accomplished by grown adults. And to think they supposedly came from a generation that wasn't as 'me, me, me' as the Millenials, but in reality they are just as much responsible for the 'me, me, me' mentality because they fed it to their own children.

I'm not afraid, near the tail end of a four day, after encouraging another pilots discontent with his/her lot in life, to "You should check out. Nothing good will come from your career if the lenses you wear inhibit your ability to think positively about life. There are far greater endeavors than flying a tube around, there is beauty the world over that can make you happy if you just allow yourself to see it. Was fun flying with you, but don't keep yourself strapped into the psychological nightmare you've created."

That usually drives a significant pause and then a "yeah, well, we will see...take care."

Fast forward about 4-6 months, I notice same person in the lounge complaining about something ridiculously simple with such disdain that it is distracting. Old habits die hard.

In the end, some folks just don't prepare themselves professionally, intellectually, or personally to actually enjoy life.

Find a way to be significantly different than them and you'll go places, oh - and be patient...but not too patient. Stay hungry, apply, network, meet random strangers, hold a conversation without complaining...good things will come.

From what I can tell, nearly
How many of these aircraft will be additional vs. replacement?
Seems the 330s will be additional airframes. I'd guess the 321's will be mostly additional and partly replacement...from what we know 10 older 75's are being parked. There has been talk that some older 320's will go to pasture but nothing has been announced. Past precedent would lead one to believe that announced retirements will be seen through. Possibly delayed but ultimately realized. Long live the diesel 9!

But we're still getting an assload of 739's which, guardedly, I think is ultimately a positive thing.
