New Movie... Disney PLANES!

I saw this thing at Oshkosh. The comment about iMovie pretty much sums up the whole movie. And I think at this point even the 4 year olds must be getting tired of uber-cliche underdog stories. Although I did hear the phrase "pitch for Vy" once, so that was a plus.

You guys better like it because clips from the movie are going to be showing up as light-hearted junkets in aviation training videos, PowerPoint presentations, and sales pitches for the next ten years.

Frankly, I'm getting tired of Airplane! clips.

Crap. Dane Cook is in it? Nevermind. :(

He has to be in it. Voice acting roles are all that's left for him. Rumor is after he made that stupid grocery boy movie that he banged Jessica Simpson and once you've boarded that career failboat you can't show your face in Hollywood.

Wow, tough crowd in here. This was originally supposed to be a direct to DVD release from Disney Toon Studios. For something that started out without the standard Pixar budget, this should be pretty good. The bits I've seen regarding making of, were that they worked very hard to keep airplanes connected to actual physics (ie they wouldn't just have a plane stop mid-air...)

Also, the fact that they have Anthony Edwards and Val Kilmer playing Tango & Bravo (and their matching Top Gun helmets) is pretty bitching. I'm going on opening night with my 4 year old and plan on enjoying it and accepting it for what it is, a cartoon about talking planes.

Are we talking pre-Nick Lachey or post-Nike Lachey "Mom Pants" Jessica Simpson?

Either. The Daddy-issues in that family are legendary and the money being poured into her music career that just wouldn't catch. Anybody latching onto that train publicly was destined for derailment. That, and Dane Cook was funny for 30 seconds ten years ago.

Well we've beaten Top Gun to death in training videos and presentations. John Wayne still makes an appearance in CRM class.

I wish! I saw the free showing with my bride at the Hascom base movie theater. Can't beat the price, though...

Overseas, you had the base theatres...old school.... with the "alert" red-lighted sign and klaxon next to the movie screen, in the case of a scramble launch.

You called it, New American Airlines "Planes" Commercial

WHY OH WHY DO THEY HAVE DANE COOK IN IT?

Aeeeeeeeeeeigh. If Dane Cook's a standup comedian, I'd better start doing amateur hour.

Yeah, he is a no go. Ive never cracked a smile or smirked at a single one of his jokes. Word is, hes hated around the stand up community. I interviewed Bill Burr (funny as hell) for Smash last year and we got on the topic of Dane Cook. Hes not a fan and had some pretty effed up things to say about him. He said, all stand up comedians are haters and gossip queens who will turn on any comedian who makes it big.

Oh, it gets better than that...in the movie, Dusty gets directions from that same AA plane, then congratulates him on the new paint scheme. Probably the most blatant advertising I've ever seen in a movie.

I'm not gonna lie, I was pretty disappointed with it. I was a big fan of Cars, and had high expectations for Planes. But it lacks everything that made Cars (and all other Pixar movies) great. The story line is predictable and short-sighted, the characters never really get developed, and the attention to detail that Disney/Pixar usually has is non-existent. Hell, I'd even say the movie was downright racist.

It did have some good parts though. They did have a ton of quirky aviation jokes and puns, and they threw some pretty interesting easter eggs in there (I wonder how many people will notice the Amelia Earhart radio call...). It's a good movie to take the kids to, I guess. But if you're expecting it to be anywhere close to as good as other Disney/Pixar movies, you'll be sorely disappointed.
