As others have said, his uh "Richardness" has been a not-very-well-kept secret for decades. I've always been a Bob Hoover adherent, myself. A true gentleman by all accounts I've read.
Now, with that said, I don't think the fact that he's a hygeine product erases any of his achievements. Yes, part of it was "right place right time", but part of it was skill and aggression. And apparently eyesight. It's worth remembering that the guy came from the hollows of West Virginia and if they hadn't thrown a War, he'd probably have been a coal miner and dead at 50 from black lung. My father came from right across the border in eastern Kentucky, and was headed straight for the same Company Store Hell, cept he found himself in Dubya Dubya Two, uh, too. Now, he wasn't a dick (at least not in the same way), but if instead of using the GI Bill to go to school, he'd stayed in and fought tooth and nail for every promotion against the tide of ring-knockers (hero or not), I can feature him having developed the same sort of egocentric, self-impressed buffoonery.
In any case, it's interesting to me that anyone is surprised. Great warriors, especially those of the Frank Luke/Chuck Yeager mold (reckless, arrogant, aggressive) don't always make the best role models. Randy Cunningham, anyone?
