Rant from a regional FO!

True. And it's also true that jobs can change. A job that someone enjoys greatly could become a nightmare with a new boss. Or if you're forced to move (or commute) across the country to keep it. Or any other number of things.

To be fair, sometimes how much a particular job is good or sucks isn't apparent until you've arrived there. Looks great from the outside, but once there, there could be any number of things that suck...QOL, pay, the job itself, etc. It took me getting on to the active duty AF and only being there fully qualified for a good few years, to realize that the job was getting suckier and suckier, and that the price paid in time, lifestyle, QOL, etc, was rapidly becoming not worth the "fun" of being able to fly the few hours a week in a jet....which in itself was work with few hours of actually being able to relax and enjoy-the-flying fun.

THIS makes sense. I get this point, and I read your original post. Your original post reference leaving the mil. I respect your post, and this position.

I had a long response written about the rest of it, but I sounded like a dick after reading it, so I'll leave it at this.

You are aware that there are people around here that know you went from a PFT situation to get your "in", that your parents paid for, to working for your parents, doing real estate? A year ago. You are self-aware enough to know this, right? If not, please, don't let me burst your bubble. Continue. Please.

It makes sense that since you paid no dues, and bought your seat that several years later you whine about how sucky your deal is flying a jeeet back and forth to Orlando. And sitting on the Board at ALPA. Union rep? (Honestly, not familiar w the structure, but you get the point, right?) Com' on MAN!

Now let me add a few things to your list. Me and ATN_Pilot don't work/nor have ever worked at the same airline, but in 2010 I was freaking out about something that happened to me. My union wasn't giving me a lot of info so I reached out to ATN. He calmed me down and went over what might happen and the time lines. He didn't have to but did. I am a emotional person and am quick to get upset. ATN lets me vent and is good and calming me down. I am not even in his group at ALPA. I don't agree with him on many things but I always feel I can get help from him if I need it.

Ah, Gonzo, you're getting me all verklempt. :)

And let's not even talk about bankruptcies, mergers, acquisitions, hostile takeovers, ...

Several years back at NJC I recall a hike with ATN_Pilot, Rocketman99, BobDDuck and I, out in the desert along the phallic road..We could have easily taken care of things ;) and made him disappear, but despite what happens on the boards, in the end we get along. There was some differing opinions during the trek but in the end, people can agree to disagree and still get along. That is what I take from this site....

I always thought it was pretty important not to equate an internet persona with an "in person" persona. People talk a little more loosely over the internet than they would in a face to face conversation when you realize this is just a dude that deals with the same crap that you do.

While I highly suspect that there are some that are just as big of a tool in person (I'm speaking in general, not of any particular person,) I would still be more than willing to buy the first round in order to be proven wrong.

I don't know if anyone brought this up already, I haven't read every page, but here is a website set up by Teamsters Local 357 - Republic Airways. It was set up because management is fighting any changes to the contract ratified in 2003. http://tiredunderpaidpilot.com/disputes.html

If I was looking for a regional job and read this website I would keep my CFI job until I could land a job doing some other kind of flying.

We were all willing to put up with regional airline suck for a few short years, maybe 4-5 years. But when you have to stay at a regional for 10 or more, can you put up with the suck for that long? At what cost to your family?

Dude, that hike was painful for me. Fat dudes shouldn't hike in the desert. :)

I remember this one time, ATN_Pilot and I were walking around trying to help round up blind and abused stray dogs to take to shelters when we came upon a burning house. ATN ran inside and saved all the pets, including a gerbil. That's what kind of guy ATN really is - kind of like Michael Landon mixed with Dick Van Patton.

Seriously, can we drop all the "we love ATN" soap opera? Nothing against ATN, it's just kind of embarrassing. We aren't a bunch of girlfriends sitting around and everyone - including ATN - knows what a tool he is.

Thank you.

The thing is, that with some rare exceptions (Comair, Mesa etc) guys who have 10, or even 8 years in, are making north of 70k a year and, for the most part, have an ok schedule. Sure, it will ALWAYS suck at a regional, but the complaints that are often thrown around (food stamp wages, no days off, commuting to far away domiciles) mostly go away after you upgrade and get a little seniority. I am NOT advocating sticking around at a regional and making it a career as I don't think they will be around for that much longer, but I am saying, make sure you are complaining (or pointing out) the right problems.

I still don't get the dual personas on a networking site.

I've met quite a few guys from here, and what I've seen in person seems to match the posts.

Dude....Swing and a miss....If that's what you got out of my post I need to work on communication or comprehension. Take any member out of the list and place with another. The results would be the same as would my point. Shoot go back a few more years and it was a different group on the hike to a different area. Hell, tonyw damn near got us stuck in the desert with his great parking.... ;)

JEP - no swing and no miss - I just wanted to kick ATN in the nads. That's one of the great joys I get in life. And it's Memorial Day.
