Rant from a regional FO!

I'm back to flying a desk here at the end of my military career, and I can most sincerely say that almost every day I had flying (outside of the flights on which I experienced heart-stopping terror) were better -- more interesting, more fulfilling -- than the ones I now have (and previously had at the beginning of my career) working at a desk in an office.

The transition from flying fast, pulling G's and shooting stuff to filling out "Request for Request Forms" has to be stark!

11...and I'm sure soon to be 12 pages, of us trying take this thread seriously? Considering the first post - I must say I am quite surprised that it is still rolling.

It was dead for a few hours until you replied!

Your post reminds me of locker room antics: "OMG! Someone farted! Come here and smell this!" :)

Ah, damn it. You mean my post from late yesterday? If I knew it was almost on the pre-necro posting stage I woulda stayed away.

Owning your own company isn't quite what I have in mind when I think "desk job." I meant being a 9-5 Monday-Friday worker bee, getting the occasionally 3 day weekend. Just couldn't do it.

How do you know? Have you ever tried it?

As far as running your own company vice working for someone else at a desk, it depends. If what matters to you is being home every night, then even a cubicle job with a crappy boss will probably make you happier than flying, trucking, being a bus driver, or doing any other job that requires a lot of time on the road. If being your own boss is what matters to you, then neither working the cubicle nor flying are going to be fulfilling, and you need to pursue entrepreneurship. Again, it just depends on what your priorities are.

So, it was fun, there were nice times, but I'll leave this crap to some other nitwit to bother with.

At least concerning AETC... the purity of flying general aviation is a huge breath of fresh air. I don't think I've ever appreciated it more than now. It's certainly a rarity in the military to run into someone who understands and appreciates it...

Not all flying jobs require a lot of time on the road. I haven't spent one day away from home for almost two years. I uh, almost miss it...

When I lived with roommates, I loved being on the road and living in hotels. Now I've got my fiance and daughter at home, it's not as much fun as it used to be. If my seniority ever improves, I'll be looking at spending a lot more time at home.

You are aware that there are people around here that know you went from a PFT situation to get your "in", that your parents paid for, to working for your parents, doing real estate? A year ago. You are self-aware enough to know this, right? If not, please, don't let me burst your bubble. Continue. Please.

It makes sense that since you paid no dues, and bought your seat that several years later you whine about how sucky your deal is flying a jeeet back and forth to Orlando. And sitting on the Board at ALPA. Union rep? (Honestly, not familiar w the structure, but you get the point, right?) Com' on MAN!

I had to check the address bar. I could have sworn this was FlightInfo by the way the thread turned.

This is where I am with this right now:

First, your facts are wrong. Second, welcome to the ignore list.

To be fair, sometimes how much a particular job is good or sucks isn't apparent until you've arrived there. Looks great from the outside, but once there, there could be any number of things that suck...QOL, pay, the job itself, etc. It took me getting on to the active duty AF and only being there fully qualified for a good few years, to realize that the job was getting suckier and suckier, and that the price paid in time, lifestyle, QOL, etc, was rapidly becoming not worth the "fun" of being able to fly the few hours a week in a jet....which in itself was work with few hours of actually being able to relax and enjoy-the-flying fun.
