Final check

I realize this isn't about aviation but I believe I need some advice.

Until recently I rented a room under a non-contracted arrangement. When I lost my job, I gave the owners notice that I was leaving and one of them said he had wanted two months notice, a point we had never talked about and more importantly, he had never gotten an agreement, written or verbal from me since he knew I was only there temporarily.

When I left, my former employer still owed me money and I didn't have the resources to wait. They sent my back pay to the address I had formerly stayed at before I could update them on where I would be. The owners now refuse to send me my pay.

What can I say to them to get them to surrender my pay or should I go straight to a relative who is a lawyer?

Show up with a sheriff. They have zero authority to with hold mail. It's a felony.

Edited to add:
The deliberate withholding and/or opening of US mail that is addressed to another party is a violation of federal law.
The penalty for tampering with US mail is a maximum of 5 years in a federal facility and/or a $250,000 fine.
The US Postal Service takes mail tampering very seriously and strongly urges anyone who has been harmed in such a matter to contact the US Postal Inspectors Service.

How bout go back to your employers and ask for a new check.

Request a replacement check from your former employer. If they ask you to pay a cancelled check fee (or similar), remind them that they fired you and ask them to kindly cut you a little slack. Besides, your former landlord isn't going to cash the check without committing a slew of felonies, so that should be a concern.

Good luck going forward. You've learned a couple of lessons the hard way.

This is dependent upon the labor law in your particular jurisdiction, and you should consult your state's Department of Labor/Industrial Relations/whomever for further details...and possibly an attorney.

If you're in California, you can see here.
