National Museum of the USAF

I think I'll do a long XC this year over there.
It'll be worth the trip. You can't land at the museum, so you'll have to pick a nearby airport and find a ride. Maybe find another jc'er in the area or contact Meyers9163 to see if he's up for it.
OR...let us know in advance and we can storm the place for a m&g.
Last time I was there it took me Friday, Saturday, and Sunday to look at everything. I was there from open to close every one of those days.
I was a USAF brat and we were stationed there in the mid-70s. We went EVERY Sunday while we were there. I've loved airplanes since I was two. So, I spent a lot of time looking at the displays and walking down "Memory Lane". I have a lot of childhood memories there and on base. You might be a little faster than me.
Huffman Prairie is pretty close to the museum too.

As a child of the 80s I totally agree. The F-14 was THE fighter plane at the time.

While the F-14 was starring in a movie and kids were putting posters of it up on their walls, the F-15 was out racking up a 104-to-zero air-to-air kill record.

Oh stop....ok, valid point :) Though in Iranian hands, the Tomcat (according to Tom Cooper) "supposedly" has more kills but some losses.

Looks awesome....almost as nice as the Naval Aviation Museum in Pensacola!

It is pretty saddening every time I taxi by all of those war machines sitting out on the apron rotting away. The salty Florida air is not too friendly. Quite a few people have offered to restore them, but the are refused. As a side note, it was good to see the Blues out practicing.

Hey not hating on the F-15 at all. When I was 8 I had a few of those Ertl die cast F15s. I also liked playing the old Microprose F15 sim that was made by Wild Bill Stealy and Sid Meyer.

I spent 2 hours at that museum a few years ago. I got to go see the presidential planes and all those experimental ones. It is one of the best museums I have ever been to. Unfortunately, 2 hours is not long enough.... I need to stay there a few days to enjoy all the stuff they have there. Fortunately, I get to visit the museum again in May! :D

I remember when the F-15 was still experimental. I asked my dad if he was going to fly one if/when the USAF gets them. Short answer - no. He preferred radials and props over jets.
The fruit don't fall too far from the tree in that respect. I would totally take a job flying radials over one in a jet.
He eventually ended up flying KC-135s, but said he hated it. He retired after that.

Very cool pics thanks to the OP for posting. I defiantly dug the pics of the B-36 (perhaps the coolest bomber in the world).
Funny you should say that. There's a B-36 that was just recently restored to flying condition and will be on the airshow circuit starting this year.

This isn't some April fools joke is it? I mean is there any way to train a flight/MX crew in a B-36 these days?

If it's true it would be very cool to see.

Edit your reply hit at the same time as mine.

Damn you ;).

I got lucky and had a long layover in Dayton last week, Such an amazing place! and FYI for anyone going you have to sign up to see the presidential planes and experimental planes (must see XB-70A Valkyrie) the sign up location is at the exit of the WWII aircraft exhibit.

And its FREE admission!

I'm going in October. Where and when must you sign up for the Valkyrie exhibit? How far in advance?

I gots to see that XB-70!
