My compliments on your choice of headset. Those PA-1779s are so under rated it's scary.

Well funny thing is that was my first flight with it, my other headset developed some problems this past weekend so I picked up the 1779 yesterday after getting a positive recommendation from Cessnaflyer and took my son out for a little testing. So far I'm impressed, very comfortable and quiet. Great price, good warranty, reportedly great customer service, and Made in the USA... I had to give them a shot.

I bought a used one on Ebay in 2008 for around $200. It was pretty beat up, but worked. Two months ago, I sent it off to them for a total rework. They basically replaced everything, wired in the ANR-cutoff (if you unplug it, it turns off the ANR) the cell phone interface, and new ear seals. They also gave me a set of cords and stuff, for around $175.

So, I'm $375 into this nice ANR headset. I do like the Zulu 2 (tried one out and it's awesome) but for $500 less, I'm very happy with what I have.

Have you tried using the cell phone interface? I tried last night and my wife could hear me but I couldn't hear her. Yesterday I had called Pilot USA to ask some questions before buying and the guy said many cell phones have very low output and will require the use of an additional amplifier. I'm suspecting I need that. The aviation specific ones are like $120+ which is nuts, I'm looking into rolling my own right now.

Happy you like the headset!

Does the microphone function for the cell phone?

I just don't think I could do it. Too much open water for too long.

I thought a bunch about it today on a 3 hour leg (in a much bigger plane) and realized I just couldn't sit in a seat for that long with out moving around. That and there is a lot of water.
