Jersey Shore - Post Sandy

For the record, Seattle is far enough from Ranier to be clear of pretty much any potential problem. Even a St. Helens sized blast wouldn't do much to the city, other than make it very dusty/ashy for a while and flood some rivers and lakes.

The point is that there are multiple factors. More houses existing = more houses damaged. Also, how many snow days a business has is hardly evidence for global-scale climate modification.

So all of Florida, right?

:D
Usually Florida has some very damaged areas, but for the most part there is a plan in place (and buildings built in a way) that major damage like NYC had isn't seen with a cat 1 storm (or even larger most of the time). It's the design of the buildings/ city that has caused the biggest issues in the NE. If they were built to Florida hurricane code standards they likely wouldn't have had the major loss of life and damage.

Seriously?

I guess we should all abandoned ship and move. Where do you live, we will all come live with you since clearly your area is not prone to any form of natural disaster. You obviously thought long and hard about the safest place to live. That or maybe you put as little thought into it as the statement you made.

Yes, seriously. How can you argue with the fact that you said this was a storm of proportions which we have never seen before, yet I provide proof to the contrary.

I live in the Hampton Roads area. When I moved here 3 years ago, I had the choice of living down by the ocean, or 10 miles inland. One of the main reasons I chose inland was so that I wouldn't have to deal with the effects of the tidal surge that a hurricane will likely bring.

I didn't say that one should not live NEAR the ocean. I said that one shouldn't live BY the ocean; as in the first house the tidal surge hits is yours. For those inland that were impacted by Sandy, I truly feel sorry. For those that bought or built oceanfront property...well...I can't feel quite so sympathetic.

Global warming is alive and accelerating. One consequence is more severe weather in every extreme. More storms, snow, heat, cold, yada yada.
You are only allowed to deny it apparently, if you are a dyed in wool republican.

In the past year I went through one massive hurricane, and many earthquakes above 6 of magnitude among them a 7.1 about 30 km from my house.

What made me feel safe there is that there are no Media!

Btw nobody got hurt in any of the above events, this in a 3rd world country where most of the peoples live in sheds...

They were in 2004 and was 3 in a row. It does take awhile for things to get back to normal. The thing about Florida is that it is built more to prepare for hurricanes. Most of the homes/ buildings in the NE are very old and not built to current hurricane standards. Most of the homes in our area are concrete block, which withstands winds well. Homes built on the coast are usually raised or protected from flooding in some way. The water damage is usually the worst part of the storm and is almost always the most deadly. We rarely get that in Central Florida (though the 3 punch did bring in so much rain many low lying areas were flooded).
Sorry, but the hurricanes of 2005 that impacted me at work were Arlene, Dennis, Katrina and the whopper that shut down power for 12days: Wilma.

I don't remember those. I do remember the three that crossed Florida in 2004. Insurance companies should be glad they got it all out of the way in one year instead of complaining. If they had fixed the damage and then they hit the next year it would have cost them twice as much. ;)

Figured the climate change yahoos would be out and about on this one. This isn't the first new england hurricane and certainly won't be the last. It's GOING to happen. In fact, the only the constant about the climate is that it is constantly changing.

It will continue to do so with or without humans on the planet all the way until long after the sun is extinguished...

There have been fewer major hurricanes the last few years- particularly fewer that make landfall in the US... really the last big amount was 2005. That's 7 years ago. It will statistically move up and down and humans and our politics have very little impact on it.

We need to do our part to be responsible, but the liberal climate change movement is downright stupid.

Since you have referred to us as yahoos and labeled scientific facts as stupid, please explain the water in the arctic, melting of the glaciers and all the other changes they haved proved to be related to climate change? No one said we don't have hurricanes here. What I said is that we are having more major storms of every type that then cause a lot of damage. I keep a journal and I write these events down. So, that's how I know, from my little spot in heaven, that we are getting more major storms of every type.

Well I still have photos of the damage to our workplace in Coconut Creek where we lost power for 12days. And that is inland! I had to fly in staff to MCO because all the airports in southern FL were closed. The TSA gave them a really hard time because they had one way tickets since we didn't know how long they would be there. I had warned them and supplied them with documentation of their mission, but it didn't phase the TSA. We had to find gasoline in the north, put it in massive barrels and truck it down because we had 50 patients and staff to feed and care for, on top of a roof that was gone and a mess to clean up. I had to get cash to staff for payroll because there was no power for them to get to the banks and the banks had no power. So, if they needed cash I had to get it to them.

Inflation is significant. Storms cost more because the dollar is worth less... a lot less.

On top of that, ocean and ice levels have varied dramatically over the centuries, sometimes with very quick movement in one direction or another. Anyone claiming that humans are causing all of it are giving us way to much credit.

Like I said, climate change has always happened and always will.

I guess when Turk returns he will be happy to see that someone has taken his baton of lunacy and is running with it.

I wonder if the good folks of New Orleans or those of Florida smile a bit (to themselves, of course) when we speak of the epic Category One storm which was Sandy. Every tragedy is felt most keenly at the point of impact and no one's pain is less than another's when the waters rise and the wind blows hard. We got hit, for sure, but there's a bigger storm comin' one day ...

The sun always rises.
