It's really easy. Just know exactly what you want, be nice, keep comms short and clear, listen for a minute before keying mike and have plan/route B if clearance denied. Out ATC are the best of the best and they could sniff a novice from first contact.

Learn words WILCO and COPY because you can not read back all that block of info they fire at you.
Make sure you have all your on course headings handy. If you say standby and start punching buttons to get your heading they may send you their way
