Delta opening new hire window?

My favorite, being in the right place , story happened to a guy I used to instruct with back in the mid 90s.

Back then you needed to burn yourself out instructing till you got a few thousand hours then you had to hope that some fly by night freight/charter company would hire you to get about 250 multi engine hours. If you didn't die in an a fiery night wreck, in some old beat up Navajo and , if you were lucky, you'd get a job in the right seat of a 1900 and you felt like you hit the lottery. There were no back packs, ear buds, and RJs back then, in the old days :)

Anyhow this guy managed to secure an interview with some half ass freight operator in KY I think they flew Navajos or something like that. He headed down the night before and was having dinner at the hotel restaurant. They guy next to him likes his hat. They're both fans of the same hockey team. After they talk hockey all night the guys asks him why he's there. He said "I'm trying to get a job as a pilot and I have an interview tomorrow" The other guy tells him to blow off the interview and come see him in his office tomorrow instead. Appears this guy was the CP for a certain brown colored freight operator in Louisville. JM is now an A300 CA. Not bad. Never touched a turboprop or regional airline.

In all honesty, he is actually a good guy and really good at networking but this one just fell in his lap. Even now, amoungst my many furloughed and battle scarred airline pilot friends, anytime you mention his name there is this loud groan that usually comes over the conversation lol.

True Story!!!

That's kind of awesome. I know a guy who flew MU-2 for years and years and was eventually basically brow-beaten to go fly DC-10s by the CP, with whom it sounds like he drank uh "fairly steadily". But that story puts mine to shame.

Just goes to show, you never know who you're sitting next to. So try not to look at their tits too much.

That's why I'm here.

But not many will listen, so take advantage of the information.

Derg, you like Korean BBQ? They have some mean places in Queens, right on the way to the CP office at Kennedy, I'll buy, wink, wink. I kid. Great advice. I will be sure to listen. Man what I would do without this site.

Just a follow up, not to say I am right but just so people don't get their hopes up. Delta pilots were told that with their TA they would hire this fall. Thats not happening. Next year, they will get 737s and 717s but the new contract requires less pilots to do the same work. They only have 135 or so retirements next year and massive retirements don't kick in until 2017. I am now changing my position on when delta will hire from late 2013 to late 2014. Im just as pissed as everyone else about it becuase delta was always my number 1, but im not waiting anymore, Im taking my talents to Houston (if they interview or hire me of course). Maybe Delta will purchase pinnacle or something to feed their employment needs for the future because USair, United, and Spirit are going to take a lot of qualified checkairmen, captains and fo's by then..

My contact is saying early 2014.

FTDT took a big hunk out of the required number of pilots, not many guys took the "early" as sold by the MEC and most of the jets are replacing jets already on site.

Another reason why I plead with guys to vote on the merits of the TA, quantitatively not the "if this, then that, then if that.... ALIENS!" approach.

Oh whatever. One man one vote, unless you live in Chicago.

Everyone I flew with saw $ signs (however small) and voted instantly. They could have cared less about pilots required, reserve rules, early outs, etc. They repeated the MEC sales pitch to give it lip service but it was clear they didn't care.

Maybe I'm just overly naive of my personal situation but I rather have my number one be one of the last to hire. I much rather have the others cull the heard some while I bolster my resume and contacts at Delta so when they do hire I have a much higher stock and my slim chance of getting on might be a little better. I want to be in the beginning not a leftover. Of course this will all be a moot point if they aren't going to entertain non-121 resumes.

Wait, but Trip7 said if you vote yes, we'd all have jobs at mainline. WTH. I want my money back.
You mean we aren't going to be:

That news sucks. Even I would consider wearing a widget jet uniform if given an opportunity. I'm in a good place now at Blue juice factory but I'm always looking for better/other opportunities. Just rode home yesterday on a DL flight and was shooting the crap with the CA as we were waiting at the gate. After our discussion he tells me he's part of the hiring/recruitment team. Hands me his card and tells me to keep in touch. Networking is the key to this game. How I got onto Blue is a story in itself.

Delta's latest update states the airline is adequately staffed for summer 2013. Unless retirements suddenly pick up in early 2013, they plan on hiring late 2013 for the 2014 ramp up. 717s start arriving in August 2013. 737-900s also will arrive around that time although domestic 757/767 block hours will be reduced as they arrive. DC9 is now planned to stick around even longer, so rumors of the crew that flies a 757 to the airline graveyard deadheading back in a DC9 may come true.

Delta will retire 50% of the current seniority list in 2024, which is faster than any airline in the industry other than US Airways. Your patience will be greatly rewarded.
