Do the majors want JET time?

I will be flying for a airline that only has prop aircraft (CommutAir DHC-8) what are some thoughts on the majors wanting me once I put in my time?

I'm flying with a former s-3 AC and a beech b-100 FO now.

Sorry to extend the thread creep. Some airlines want jet time and other don't care. It's sort of a supply/demand thing. I got hired with no jet time but it was when my airline was hiring warm bodies like crazy. I guess I'm living proof that with enough training a guy's first jet can be a 727.

I have filled out a few applications and I don't recall any requiring me to specify jet vs turboprop.

From what I am hearing they want a pilot who loves aviation and is willing to out in a good day's work. Recentcy of experience, type of flying, and drive (which can be seen in a resume) are all taken into account. At least that's what I've been told for DL and FDX as they are using the same "outside counsel" for reviewing applicants.

Do your best at work, and apply to where you want to be. If you know someone, hit them up, as it (almost) always helps.

It's supply and demand, simple as that. But I would think being a well qualified Captain, with check airmen and other things, safety, training etc...the type of aircraft you flew would mean less. I would say this, if you have to opportunity to do something else, while you are swinging gear, do it. I have been stuck as an F/O for a long time, but I am in my safety department and have worked on various projects. It shows leadership, desire and commitment, more then waiting for the left seat. There are a ton of Jet Captains out there, but if you have other things, I would say it would eliminate the jet issue.

The Majors (and every other employer) want you to be typed and current on the aircraft you'll be flying on the routes you'll be flying under the regulations you'll be governed by. If they could clone the guy who is currently doing the job, they would.

Well, why hasn't Delta called then? :)

Just so we're clear, the S-3 was/is a jet, and the S-2 was a recip that my old man flew briefly in the stone ages

Honestly, if you want to open all doors, 121 crew jet time is the way to go. This has been changing the last couple years... but it is now here. I'm not saying it's impossible to get a job without, but it'd be a huge help to have the jet 121 time.

In another ten or fifteen years it might become more relevant. But in the next 3-5 years, the guys sitting on the hiring boards will for the most part have gotten their jobs after flying for a prop regional. Regional jet pilots are a dime a dozen today, a diverse resume will probably get you farther than having sat in the front of an RJ for the last couple of years. At least that's what I'm hoping

Diversity? I HAZ it. Freight, freight, freight, right seat jet charter, left seat jet charter, air ambo. If I can get me that OV-10 gig, I'll be one rotor-wing job away from having DONE IT ALL. And then surely Southwest or Delta will be murdering people to get to bang on my door. Yeah.

DL hates MU-2 time...sorry chap

How do you know - you aren't what DL is looking for anyway and you know it...because of that Joel guy and your comments about Auburn. Boris could have all the MU2 time in the world, but if he shows up with an Auburn shirt and Cam Newton tat then Joel will get it done. You know this.
