From the Face Palm Files...

What a toolbox this pilot is. It's my personal experience that Newark controllers are easiest to work with out of the three NYC area class B airports, as long as you listen and comply with instructions.

Heck, coming back from Central Park last fall, I was surprised that several times, they let me transition over the top of EWR at 1500', during the early evening international push, in a big ol' slow airship no less.

Newark is super easy as long as you're paying attention.

And they had you transition over the center of the airport because nobody else is going to be there. If they had you transition 2 miles north or south of the airport you would have ended up having a 737 fly straight through you.

Obviously. This isn't my first rodeo, mang. :)

Never met any lady ATCers, but I've found in other areas that the hotter they sound, well, the voice usually doesn't match the face.

You'd be amazed. Actually in ATC the hotter they sound the more they're like the guys as far as what they say to boot. Its a win win. You've never lived until you've given or received a brief chock full of innuendo.

I haven't been lucky enough yet. :(

This guy is lucky he didn't get one of the more •-y ny approach controllers!
There's a ny TRACON guy (really nice guy too,) but has a reeeeeeally thick Brooklyn accent which can be tough at high volume times. You have to be on game and anticipate instructions otherwise you're hosed. Good thing this WW didn't get him...

And you guys wonder why us WW are intimidated about flying into Class B the first couple times...

:)

That's a large part of the reason I did a LOT of my flying in the wee hours of the morning. I'd take off from AUS around midnight, 1am. They'd hand me off to Departure and it'd go something like this...

"Departure, Cessna 1234, two thousand for three thousand five hundred, VFR Llano"
"Cessna 1234....traffic at....25 miles west."
"Affirmative, have traffic in sight."
"Great. Call us if you need anything else. Sky is yours."

This made my day! All I could imagine while listening to this was him in the cockpit with all the latest bells and whistles and of course I guarantee he had a BT GPS connected to foreflight sportin the ipad! The attitude said it all! LOL Then again, i'm pretty inaccurate when it comes to generalizing.... Thanks to EWR/LGA/JFK for all the help you give us during our survey missions in and around the big apple! You guys are top notch!

It also gave me flashbacks of when I was a CFI. I had a student that refused to learn basic pilotage and dead reckoning because he had a great GPS in his airplane and he could fly from RHV direct to anywhere in the world, fuel permitting.

Oh, Joy.

I had an Private Pilot student with a bad Napolean complex tell an examiner ON HIS CHECKRIDE, "with all the electronics available, pilotage and deadreckoning is B***S***" after being told to have his VFR Navlog ready for a XC trip (no VOR's). He showed up with a computerized DUATS log with VOR's.
