SkyWest Hiring FOs

Good stuff Landis. Thanks much for the input. Curious to hear how things pan out for you. What's your situation? Wife, kids, single, running from alimony? Just playing. I'm pretty anchored here in San Diego with family, mortgage, etc. and If I was to get hired, how it would work out logistically. LA would be ideal as I could commute out of local Carlsbad but I'm quite clear that it's a very senior base. Are you commuting or living at your assigned base? I'll be 51 in August and have apprehensions about whether I'm a little late to the game all together. Than again, flying RJs in itself sounds like a blast after 22 years flying swing wing.

Best of luck to you and keep us chair flyers up to speed on your adventures.

Have you thought about trying for the Bro? From what I hear FAT and PSP are junior, I know PSP is only a coupe hour drive, I'm hoping to make it there myself (I start June 4) and will be moving back to SD.

Thanks etflies. Congratulations on getting hooked up. I had a friend who flew for SW many years back and was based out of PSP but he was living in the Temecula area which was just under two hours. I wasn't sure if SAN could be had in 2 hours also? I'm in the N.County area so it may be a little more feasible. But I'm sure there are folks doing it from SAN. Time to jump in my truck and time the drive:)

Welcome Aboard!

Let me know, I used to live in North County as well, I'm looking to get back to the same area. PM me, let's grab a beer when I get out there if you're not already in class.

I'm sure these questions have been asked a thousand times, for a new FO on reserve what is a fair average one would expect to be on overnight trips each week? Also, where can one we based when just starting out? On reserve, how long do you have to report for work from getting called in. One more? If you are staying at a crash pad for your stanby time. What can be expected to pay to do so. How long can one epect to be based in LA? Just trying to learn more about life as an airline pilot.

thanks much for any info

Summer months, you'll probably work a lot. After that, who knows, while on reserve. Crew support has to give you 2 hours to report for checkin. You also have to allow time to park and take the shuttle bus to the terminal and clear security. On the jet, you can hold most bases within a few months, as long as hiring continues. But as said, I'd try for the Bro. You can probably easily get PSP or LAX, and maybe even get off reserve somewhat quick. In the jet, you'll be on reserve for a awhile in those bases. PSP is more senior than LAX on the jet side. In the jet, PHX can be an option too once you can hold a line.

Thanks for the info Saxman. Do you really play Sax? Very cool. Been a drum teacher for a better part of 30 years. You know Sax players are in demand right? Hadn't thought of PHX. In my search for direct flights from the local airports I came across this site that lists all direct flights from all major, even some smaller airports in the country . www.nsflight.com Found a lot of direct flights from SAN to PHX should that happen to work out. Good call Saxman.
Curious how the schedule works when it comes to hard days off during reserve.

Thanks again for the input.

I agree. At this point it's probably a toss up whether you'll get the Bro or the RJ, but I would hope for the Bro if I were you. I commute (drive) from Carlsbad out to PSP, and I make it in 1:50 with no traffic. I've made it from downtown SD in 2 hours flat, again with no traffic. The drive to LAX is probably about the same, if not a few minutes shorter, but you have to factor in the employee shuttle from the parking lot to the terminal, TSA, etc. From the employee parking lot in PSP I am checked in and in the crew room in less than 10 minutes. Also, like the others mentioned, the Bro is MUCH more junior than the RJ. FO's fresh off IOE are already holding lines this month. Good luck!

SDPilot, Thank you. Was hoping to hear more on this subject. I live in San Marcos. If report time is two hours do you get concerned about being late? Or have you been? Are you on reserve still? What are your typical days on trip away from home each week? Are you spending overnights in either PSP or LAX? If so, how do you afford accommodations? Sorry man, questions coming out like a high schooler and I don't mean to. I haven't even been hired yet. Just trying to get a feel of how this all works coming from a 9-5 job 5 miles each way. Which by the way is slowly seeing me to an early grave due to bordom etc.

Much appreciate everyone's time.

Hey Kyle,

Wife, no kids, condo that can't be sold. Wife's job currently pays the bills and allows me to pursue this career. I'm a career-changer and not that young but certainly wasn't the oldest in my class. A couple guys in your age range.

Drove my car from the SF Bay Area to SLC to start reserve as I decided that I'd rather be without it at home than stuck without transportation in a new town. Crashing on a friend's couch for now and using up some hotel points from a previous job. Funny thing was that after spending almost 12 hours driving to SLC I got a call from Crew Scheduling putting me on a flight the next morning with an overnight in... you guessed it: San Francisco! :)

Still looking for a cheap crash pad in SLC to avoid paying for hotels. It looks to be a long time before I can transfer to SFO. But during the summer months if I'm going to stay busy, I don't really want to pay that much for a room that I won't use more than 4 or 5 nights a month.

As you said, it's all about the logistics.

So far, I've really met some wonderful people here. If you're interested in doing the airline thing, you could do a lot worse than SkyWest.

There a few crashpads around. Ours just filled, but some AMF guys have one for cheap. Perhaps a posting in their section might give you some leads?

Thanks for the tip. When you say posting in their section, you mean just an open posting under the Freight Pilots section?

Kyle,

I'm not on reserve so I don't deal with 2 hour callouts, but a friend of mine on reserve has been sitting in SD and hasn't had any problems. Remember, 2 hours is the MINIMUM callout. Many times they'll put a trip on your schedule a day, maybe even two or three days in advance. A 2 hour callout is usually going to be in the event that someone calls in sick last minute. That being said, you might be SOL if you receive a 2 hour call at 3pm on a Friday. There are a couple of crash pads in PSP too. Since I drive from SD, I try to bid for 4 day trips, so I'm only doing the drive out there once a week. You'll never have overnights in PSP if you're based there. Trips start and end there. Overnights will be in places like SBP, CLD, SBA, BFL, IYK, IPL, YUM, etc... out stations. And hotels are paid for on trips. I hope this answers your questions. Any others, just fire away! ...Matt...

I talked to a recruiter out in Vegas at the Job Fair in April, and called a month after that, talked to an HR lady and she sent my packet to Camiele (lead HR lady). Any idea how long it takes for them to call you back for an interview? Also, if I had to pick bro vs rj, i'd go RJ, just because I'd prefer to be based at KORD, and they only have 1 or 2 bro's at ORD.

Maybe based was the wrong word, but there is definitely a few that are there... With the old skywest logo plastered across the tail...
Must be a rare thing because I couldnt find any EMB-120 flights through ORD lately according to Flightaware.

Yes, I am that bored.

There are lots of old, former SkyWest EMB 120s with the generic paint on them out there. Though the logo should be gone. Heck a buddy of mine saw some down in Africa recently. We had a few of them head that way some years back.

Currently the most Eastern Brasilia destination is Denver.

Those poor bros... Going from flying all over the West coast in cool cities like SBA and SBP to rotting away in Africa.
