Nav Light Out, Captain wants to go. WWYD?

i guess i have too just once though, and my lights were on because I could see them reflecting off the ground (for real, not covering it up).
Yeah. It doesn't happen frequently (they are experts at minding their own business) but I've heard it. And seen someone do a return because of it.

That amazes me... Most of the time its like you said, minding there own business, and you can't believe they just let an aircraft do something.

It burned out after takeoff right?
We've had three pilots at FLX get busted for doing this. It's as simple as an FAA guy sitting in the parking lot watching you. In both cases, the pilots in questions saw it on pre-flight, or should have.

No certificate action, just a stern talking to.

Just sayin, this excuse will never fly if the FAA brings a case against you about it. Not likely they would I'm guessing.

Thats why i go to XFL! Cause FLX blows.... :Sarcasm:

This just happened to me last week. Got the paperwork, FO finished up the weight and balance, and one of the ramp guys says, "Hey... ya'll have a nav light burned out."

I called MX and deferred it per the MEL. We were late, but we were legal.

This is why my airplane carries two sets. An (M) procedure exists for a mechanic to come out and activate the other set.

Redundancy is good.

Indeed, there's a switch to go from primary to the backup lights in the breaker panel behind the captain's seat.

That being said, it shouldn't be thrown without MX doing it, and/or MX supervision, and/or making sure it's in the book and MEL'd properly or a crew down the road could be hosed when the backup burns out and nobody knows that somebody flipped the switch.

Or said another way, follow your company guidance on the issue and don't just start mashing buttons and flipping switches on your own.

Well that should go with out being said, but I had no idea that you had to throw a switch to turn on the back ups. As I said, in the dash there are two lights in each wing. A fore and aft, when the fore goes out the aft automatically comes on, then you write the forward (primary) light up. I would like to hear how other aircraft like Boeing and Airbus products operate, whether it is automatic or manual.

A bit older, but our 707's have two lights as well. However, they're both always on. When one burns out, write it up and hopefully replace it before the second one goes.
