172 with failed engine today

I was flying near SPS today when a 172 gave a mayday call on guard with a failed engine. Was anybody else around the area for that? The pilot ended up putting it down in a field without injuries. Nice work 67T, wherever you are tonight!

On a related note, I am quickly becoming annoyed with guard nazis. After the original mayday call and the ensuing information exchanges, they kept stepping on people and causing lots of distractions.

Seriously people, it's just a radio frequency. Let it go.

Yeah, was onboard one of the Merc's last night and heard the whole exchange down there... Sure am glad all the guard police let him know he was doing things right. :sarcasm:

On a similar note from last nights flight... We went down to the gulf to put our wires out. While down there, we found a VFR aircraft transiting through the area on TCAS. When we tried to get a hold of them to warn them they were risking aircraft damage/loss on guard, I'm sure you can figure out what kind of responses we did get... :mad:
 
I've heard some funny stuff on guard, but you're right, the guard police thing gets old FAST especially when guard is being used exactly what it was designed for. I heard a 172 declare a mayday back in the fall (he also ended up landing in a field successfully), and wouldn't you know it, quite a few "YEERRRRR ON GUARDDD" while myself and other crews were trying to relay messages to ATC

Precisely! That's what the Guard freq is for, dumb Guard Nazis! They treat it like it's some frequency that's to never, ever, be spoken on........for any reason.
