Is it "rude" to request a certain runway?

I just want to make sure I'm not annoying anyone...but I usually like to request the runway closer to my fbo in order to save time taxiing. I always say, "if able". That's cool right?

It's a request, not a demand!

But it really depends on the airport you're flying to. Do a runway request in ATL during peak? Don't, unless you're on fire.

I request 19R/L into LAS all the time. Controllers seemed to be shocked/happy that we ask for it and are more than happy to oblige. One of the best visual approaches in the system in my opinion. I think DCA and ASE are a bit better, but LAS is fun.

I just realized that this was in the "pilot-controller" topic.

I'm not an ATC'er so pardon my editorial comments.

Sure thing. I feel ya Monk....Probably depends on the airport. I'm thinking John Wayne for example has 19R for the big guys and 19L for GA. At my airport however, it seems pretty arbitrary.

Not at all. Sometimes they'll try to assign or advertise a runway I can't take off from anyways.

Not a controller, but if you are coming into IAD, it is busy, you get 1L/19R and you request the center, I WILL mock you off frequency. Of course they know we don't like landing on a runway that is damn near in WV. That's why most of the time they don't use it.

Then they'll tell you unable and make you fly a pattern for the opposite runway like they did to that AA jet in DFW...
that's what they tried to do...and at some point in the emergency procedure I actually advise them as to what actions I will be taking.

My opinion is the worst that could happen is you get told no , then you are in the same boat had you not asked.

I have laughed at requests during bad times before but never thought it was rude. Maybe throwing out such a request on a busy frequency would be considered rude. But if is quiet, ask away.

Yeah...like others have said, it depends on where you are and how much you know about it. If you get 18R/36L in CLT...asking for the center MAAYY get a response of unable...but most likely it will be silent.

Bottom line, all you can do is ask. It's like asking for direct. Heck I treat it like a negotiation...ask for direct to the airport, even if they don't give it to you, they will give you something and at least it gets them thinking you want short cuts.

Unless it's a tiny regional airport, that would usually end up with no directs at all!

The only place I've ever not been given direct is on the east coast. Everywhere else you can get direct 800 miles away as /A

The east coast... there is a reason for that.

I've issued directs over 1000NM away, but not as the person I was quoting implied, to the airport.

Also, it matters the time of day, when and where controllers can issue directs

I had to lol once going into ORD. peak times, wx was crap and planes holding. Lady got 27r and asked for 27l. Controller kind of chuckled on the air then didn't respond at all after that.

We try to accommodate requests, but we will let you know if there's a delay for that request or if we can't do it.

I've noticed that also. Actually had a controller ask me to verify I was /a I said affirm, then she said something like "well if you're /a then how are you flying direct?" Her tone kind of took me by surprise so without thinking I just said "magic"

Only time I've ever been asked how I was going direct as a /a. Usually it's the other way around. The controllers are trying to give me gps appchs.
