Continental hiring situation

Living the...dream?
Just got word from the padre last night that CO is planning on indefinite hire classes every Thursday. 600 UA furloughs have been called and the amount accepting has been "less than expected".

Hope this good news keep coming.

Consider that if CAL has called 600 UAL guys, then they very likely have the ability to defer until their number comes up again at United, possibly for a second time. If they do things the way we do it, then you go down the list, then back up it, but that'll be on the UAL list, not the CAL list. So this CAL call would be a free call, so to speak, that doesn't affect their recall rights at UAL.

Or in other words, it could be a long while until they're hiring off the street.

I think my contempt for the word "pilot shortage" is well known, but the upward progression will begin soon. Even with the recession and worthlessness of mainline pilot's to retain scope, I believe things will finally be moving forward a little starting summer of next year. 2016 before anything major though.

Agreed, I just think that it'll kick off at American and Airways, and be last at Delta and Unical.

Get it while the gettin' is good.

Yes, things are looking good for us pilots, at least till next spring when gas prices hit 7.00/gallon of Jet A.

Hedged to 3.50/gallon and the airlines crumble because they gave all the money to the CEO. I'm sure we as pilots will make up the difference for them.

So really what this all means is guys getting hired at regionals in the next few years will be stuck there forever because mainline will be so young because of all the hiring they will be doing.

Not necessarily, if things shape up the way we're all hoping they will, there will be probably some movement at both the regionals and mainline carriers. Keep in mind long term planning in aviation involves a Magic 8 Ball and sacrificing a chicken while dancing to tribal music.

lol! This is true..... I think it is gonna work out for everyone sitting in the left seat a regional right now though. If you pay me 150k+ I will be happy to go anywhere.

Man oh man, cal has been my dream airline since I was old enough to walk. If I could get on with them I could die happy. I'm sure it will hella hard to get on with then at first. Sometimes I wish there were still flow agreements.

What makes you say that? It didnt get that high during middle-east unrest last sring and now that qadaffi and his glamrock wardrobe are buried I think prices will fall even more.

Well there is that big factor which everyone ignores that oil is non renewable.

It's renewable alright. It will just take another 65 million years for all of us to become the organic sludge that can be burned in the next epoch's gas burners.

How long will retirements continue. Is there still a late chunk of pilots at the majors who are in there 40 and 50

I'm sure there are, plus I would figure most of the guys going to the majors are 30ish, if not older.

My dad is 57. There's only a matter of time before CO/UA starts losing a pilot every 18 hours. I say mid to late 2012 will be the beginning.

A quite enterprising captain of ours gathered a ton of data and put together a huge spreadsheet of retirements. Taking his data for UAL/CAL for instance, during the years of 2013-2020 there will be an average of 420.75 retirements per year at that airline alone. Yowza.
