Great Lakes Hiring

I know a guy that went great lakes, air whiskey, and then ups- so it is possible, but I think much more rare now. I think a lot has changed at lakes with the stagnation in the industry and their future is more uncertain with their leases with raethon and also eas funding beign debated. Would still be a fun place to go and could go back to being a place to build skills and upgrade quick, but i think even guys there have been sitting right seat for a while.

Michelle is a reeeeal piece of work too.

There is about a 100% chance that she'll read this. And a pretty high probability that Great Lakes isn't the end of her career track. Be careful.

As a guy who is going there, I have to disagree with a common remark "don't go there!". Some people don't have other regionals busting down their door wanting to hire them and It can be their only option. I have applied to ALL of the other regionals, and so far lakes and TSA were the only ones interested enough to want to interview me. I couldn't even get an interview for whatever reason with eagle despite having 860/100, they just aren't interested. In fact a friend of mine was a saab driver at colgan, and lakes was the only bit he was able to get, but wasnt hired. I know the pay I a huge draw back, but when I look back at having had a $144 paycheck for 2 weeks of instructing, I know my pay will INCREASE there. Any bad month of pay at lakes will surely be better than a good week of instructing. I'm very frugal and can live off it, because I'm used to it. maybe others go there because they want to get some good experience with weather, mountain flying, get awesome at hand flying and their instrument scan, and multi turbine PIC pretty quick. While others will still be sitting in the right seat in their 2 or 3rd year of an RJ waiting to upgrade, someone having flown at lakes will have left after their 15 months with some nice turbine pic and be on their way to a major flying something bigger and better. Believe me, I would've loved to be going to eagle, or preferably mesaba or colgan (for the Saab), but that isn't happening this time, I need to go to lakes cause it's my only option. But I will make the best of it, and do the best that I can, it could always be worse. I could be back in the army sleeping in a puddle on a cold night again.

I just don't understand how people can take the GLA job.. The pay, the conditions, the AC, the everything. Its just so ridiculous. If you take that job, you're practically bending over and taking it.

I seriously feel for you. You are braver than myself. Good luck man

Good luck at Lakes. I have met guys that enjoyed working there, you'll get to figure out if it works for you and become a much better pilot whether it works for you or not.

So can I just tell you guys my story. I held out for a 135 job. I didn't fly very much and while I never had to work for an operator like GLA I kind of wish I had looking back at my career. So at an average charter company I only flew about 150 to 200 hours a year. That is really holding me back now. Sadly in this game it is all about Total Time. In reality it doesn't even matter how well you fly. As long as you can pass a checkride and you have loads of TT your golden. I "held out" for a good job with a good QOL and now it is royally screwing me. I thought I was going to work for a company that had a philosophy that they hire good people and turn them into good pilots but no. Now it looks likely that an upgrade is 5+ years out all because I didn't take a chance and get the TT at a place like GLA. So go figure....

What is the current upgrade time at lakes? A friend of mine worked there a while back and really liked it except for the pay, he's over at fed ex now.

Well there you have it!

it s all about insuranc requirement, they want see hours in your logbook, they don't care how or where you do them, all they want see is 1000-2000hours.

wait 2013, it s going to be everywhere 1500h.no discussion.

buy a plane, keep it on the tarmac or in your garage , and let turn the engine idle for hours , all you do is put fuel and log.

nobody care, as long you log hours.

.

Surely you're joking.

If you're not, that is horrible advice.

And then when the plane stalls, this pilot will pull on the yoke and bring the power to idle, right?

I seem to get their emails once a month. It's really a shame to me that with 2400 TT, hte majority PIC, and only 39 multi regionals think I'm worthless.

I couldn't care any less if she reads this. Someone forgot to tell her she works for THE worst airline around, not one of the legacy carriers. She expects too much for 16.00 an hour. It's an even higher probability that GLA won't be around in a few years. So to Travis, Michelle, and Austin, I wouldn't give a bucket of piss for your future!!!

I'm not sure why you would not want to get rid of a bucket of peepee. You don't really need to save it and why are you wizzing in a bucket anyways... (okay don't answer that...I don't really want to know)

This is just so incredibly endearing. Because...you know...even if Michelle, or Austin, or Travis really do suck and you will never work for them...well, aviation is a really small world. They may end up at something decent (whoever they are). Additionally, I can't imagine that any of the people that actually do any hiring for anyone that frequent this board (and there are a lot) would think your post is being created by someone that they would love to have as a representative of their airline. Now...I'm exempt. I'll never work for 121 and probably the only professional flying I'll ever do will need to be created by me...so I can be as stupid as I want. But, your post - coming from someone who will seemingly really on this industry for a living, is somewhat ill considered.

Follow up question: Is Michelle hot?

I wouldn't call it worthless, just below insurance requirements.

Yeah, 1,300 PIC in passenger carrying operations isn't worth what it used to be. Apparently all those 1,000 hour instructors that never get beyond the practice area or those dual cross countries have something I lack.

:sarcasm:

That's ok, I've got something in the works with better QOL and upward mobility anyway.

Just get 11 more multi hours and you're in.
